Description


Belongs to the monotypic genus Schoeniophylax within the Furnariidae family and is characterized by its slender, elongated silhouette, reaching an average total length of 20 to 22 centimeters, with a remarkably long, stiff, and deeply graduated tail. The upperparts are primarily grayish-brown adorned with prominent dark streaks, while the crown displays a distinctive rufous-chestnut coloration. Its most diagnostic field mark is a bright yellow throat patch, which contrasts sharply with the whitish chin and surrounding facial area. The shoulder patches, or lesser wing coverts, are also a rich rufous color, easily observed during flight. Underparts are pale grayish-white, blending into buffy tones on the flanks, and the bill is relatively straight, pointed, and dark horn-colored.

Geographical distribution Occurs widely across the temperate and subtropical lowlands of southern South America. Its distribution range encompasses northern and central Argentina (extending south to northern Patagonia), western Uruguay, almost the entirety of Paraguay, southeastern Bolivia, and vast areas of central and southern Brazil, including regions within the Cerrado and Pantanal biomes.

Habitat: Prefers semi-open to open landscapes with scattered woody vegetation, such as shrubby savannas, chaco scrublands, gallery forest edges, agricultural edges, and seasonally flooded grasslands. It shows a strong affinity for damp areas, marsh borders, and riparian thickets where thorny shrubs provide ample cover and nesting sites.

Feeding Primarily insectivorous, foraging for a diverse array of invertebrates, including small beetles, grasshoppers, caterpillars, spiders, and ants. It searches for food close to the ground, hopping through dense grasses and leaf litter, occasionally gleaning prey from low-hanging twigs and foliage.

Behavior: Typically encountered in pairs or small family groups, maintaining constant vocal contact. It is a highly active and conspicuous bird, though it prefers to stay within the protective cover of dense shrubs, making short, low flights between bushes. The vocalization is a loud, dry, mechanical duetting rattle, which is frequently performed from a prominent perch to defend territory.

Nesting Constructs an extraordinarily large and complex architectural marvel relative to its body size. The nest is a bulky, oval-shaped dome composed of thorny twigs, often measuring up to one meter in length, designed to deter potential predators. This massive structure is usually placed in low, thorny trees or shrubs and features a long, horizontal entrance tunnel leading to a nesting chamber lined with soft grasses, moss, and feathers. The female typically lays a clutch of three to five pale greenish-white eggs, and both sexes cooperate in nest construction, incubation duties, and provisioning the hatchlings.

Conservation status Evaluated as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The population is considered stable and faces no immediate major threats, as the species adapts well to moderate habitat fragmentation and the creation of secondary scrub environments.
