Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

This is a small to medium-sized passerine bird characterized by its plain appearance and homogeneous coloration, measuring approximately 15 to 16.5 centimeters in length and weighing between 24 and 31 grams. Its plumage is almost entirely dull olive-green on the upperparts, blending into a slightly paler greyish-olive or yellowish-olive tone on the underparts and belly. It lacks distinct wing bars, facial markings, or prominent eye-rings, resulting in an exceptionally uniform and cryptic aesthetic. It features a rounded head with notably large, dark eyes adapted for navigating the dim light of the forest understory, and a short, sturdy bill that is dark greyish to blackish with a slightly lighter lower mandible. The sexes are monomorphic, displaying identical plumage and morphology, while immature individuals of Schiffornis virescens exhibit a browner, more rufous coloration before undergoing their first prebasic molt.

Geographical distribution: This species is endemic to the central-eastern regions of South America. Its range encompasses southeastern Brazil, stretching from southern Bahia to Rio Grande do Sul, and extends westward into eastern Paraguay and the northeastern corner of Argentina, specifically within the province of Misiones. This spatial distribution is strictly tied to the geographic boundaries of the Atlantic Forest biome, where the species finds suitable ecological niches.

Habitat: It primarily inhabits the understory and lower mid-story of subtropical and tropical moist lowland forests, as well as montane evergreen forests and mature secondary forests. It shows a strong preference for dense, shady interiors featuring abundant shrub layers, ferns, and lianas, avoiding open country, heavily degraded edges, or high canopy levels exposed to direct sunlight. Its altitudinal range spans from sea level up to approximately 1200 meters above sea level.

Feeding: It maintains an omnivorous diet with a strong emphasis on frugivory and insectivory. It consumes a wide array of small fleshy fruits, berries from families such as Melastomataceae and Rubiaceae, and various seeds, which it complements by actively hunting for invertebrates including beetles, ants, caterpillars, spiders, and orthopterans. It typically feeds by sallying from low perches, capturing prey or plucking berries directly from foliage with rapid, hovering maneuvers.

Behavior: It is a highly secretive, solitary, and inconspicuous bird that is far more often heard than seen. It spends long periods sitting completely motionless on vertical perches in the understory, relying on its olive coloration for camouflage. Despite its shy nature, it is readily identified by its distinctive, highly melodic vocalization, which consists of three or four clear, whistled notes delivered in a slow, melancholy cadence. It rarely participates in mixed-species foraging flocks, preferring to forage independently within a well-defined home range that it defends through acoustic signals.

Nesting: The breeding system of this species is characterized by a lack of stable pair bonds, involving a lek-like or dispersed-lek mating system where males vocalize from traditional territories to attract females. Nest building is performed solely by the female, who constructs a bulky, open-cup nest made of decayed leaves, dark plant fibers, moss, and fine rootlets. This nest is typically placed low to the ground, between 0.5 and 2 meters high, nestled in the forks of small shrubs, tree cavities, or the axils of palm fronds. The clutch usually consists of 2 eggs that are creamy or pinkish-white, heavily speckled with reddish-brown spots. Incubation and all parental care duties are carried out exclusively by the female without any male assistance.

Conservation status: It is currently listed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Although its overall population is suspected to be stable, local populations face ongoing pressure due to habitat fragmentation, degradation, and deforestation driven by agricultural expansion within the highly threatened Atlantic Forest biome, which isolates populations and restricts gene flow.
