This massive and robust squamate stands out as one of the largest lizards in the Americas. Adult males of this species (Salvator merianae) can reach overall lengths of 3.9 to 4.9 feet (1.2 to 1.5 meters) and weigh between 9 and 17 pounds (4 to 8 kilograms), exhibiting pronounced sexual dimorphism characterized by highly developed masseteric muscles in their jowls. The dorsal coloration features a base of black tones with dense transverse bands of white or pale cream spots running down the body and tail. Juveniles display a brilliant emerald green coloration on their snout and head that gradually fades to grey and black as they mature. Their integument is covered by small, non-overlapping granular dorsal scales and rectangular ventral plates arranged in distinct transverse rows.
Geographical distribution: It is widely distributed throughout the south-central regions of South America. Its native range encompasses most of Paraguay, northern and central Argentina (reaching as far south as northern Patagonia), much of Uruguay, and the southeastern and southern states of Brazil. Additionally, due to the international exotic pet trade and accidental escapes, breeding invasive populations have become firmly established in the southeastern United States, particularly in the state of Florida, where they pose a significant ecological threat to native ground-nesting birds, reptiles, and small mammals.
Habitat: Occupies an incredibly diverse array of ecosystems ranging from humid subtropical rainforests to semi-arid scrublands. It is commonly found in the dry forest of the Chaco, the damp grasslands of the Pampas, the savanna formations of the Cerrado, and the dense ecotones of the Atlantic Forest. The species shows a strong preference for open areas adjacent to thick vegetation cover, which provides both thermoregulatory opportunities and safety from predators. It also thrives in disturbed agricultural lands, forest edges, and suburban areas with loose, sandy soils suitable for burrowing.
Feeding: Exhibits a highly opportunistic and generalist omnivorous diet that undergoes a clear ontogenetic shift as the animal grows. Juveniles feed primarily on small invertebrates such as insects, spiders, snails, and earthworms. As they reach adulthood, their dietary spectrum broadens significantly to incorporate a large proportion of plant matter, including wild fruits, seeds, and flowers, alongside vertebrate prey like rodents, frogs, small birds, and other reptiles. They are notorious nest predators, using their highly acute vomeronasal system to detect and consume the eggs of both birds and other reptiles.
Behavior: Characterized by strictly diurnal and terrestrial habits, spending the majority of its active hours foraging on the ground. Upon emerging from its burrow in the morning, it engages in prolonged basking sessions to elevate its core body temperature before initiating any activity. It is an exceptionally skilled digger, constructing complex subterranean burrow networks that serve as thermal refuges. In the colder parts of its geographic range, it undergoes a period of winter dormancy known as brumation, retreating underground from late autumn to early spring and surviving solely on stored fat reserves.
Reproduction: Occurs annually during the austral spring, shortly after emerging from winter brumation. Females construct elaborate, dome-shaped nests using dry leaves, twigs, and other decaying vegetation, often utilizing active termite mounds to benefit from their stable humidity and elevated temperatures. Clutches typically consist of 20 to 35 leathery-shelled eggs. Throughout the incubation period, which lasts approximately 60 to 90 days, the female displays highly protective maternal behavior, defending the nesting site aggressively against potential predators. The hatchlings emerge at a length of about 8 inches and are fully independent.
Conservation status: Currently classified under the category of Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List due to its broad geographical distribution and high ecological adaptability. However, localized populations experience localized declines driven by habitat fragmentation from intensive agriculture and historical hunting pressure for the reptile leather trade and local consumption. Furthermore, because it is listed under CITES Appendix II, international trade in this species is strictly monitored and regulated to ensure that harvesting does not threaten wild populations.
