Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Is a medium-sized passerine bird belonging to the Thraupidae family, scientifically classified as Saltatricula multicolor, measuring approximately 6.3 to 7.1 inches (16 to 18 centimeters) in total length. This species exhibits a highly attractive and diagnostic plumage pattern. Its head features a prominent black facial mask that covers the eyes and throat, contrasting sharply with a broad white superciliary stripe and a distinct pure white subocular stripe. The upperparts are mostly olive-brown, while the chest and belly are greyish, blending into rich cinnamon or rufous tones on the flanks. The eyes have dark brown irises, and its robust bill, slightly decurved at the culmen, features a striking pinkish-red or orange lower mandible, with a black tip and upper maxilla. Juveniles are overall duller, showing dark streaking on the breast and lacking the sharp facial contrast of adults.

Geographical distribution: It is endemic to the Gran Chaco biogeographical region of South America. Its range encompasses northern and central Argentina (reaching as far south as Córdoba and San Luis provinces), western Paraguay, southeastern Bolivia, and extreme southwestern Brazil in the state of Rio Grande do Sul.

Habitat: Primarily inhabits dry deciduous thorn forests, xerophytic shrublands, wooded savannas, and transitional zones characteristic of the Chaco biome. It shows a strong preference for dense brushy areas interspersed with open patches of bare ground or short grasses, completely avoiding dense humid forests or closed-canopy woodland environments.

Feeding: Has an omnivore diet, though it is predominantly granivorous during most of the year. It actively searches for grass seeds and herbaceous plant seeds on the ground, supplementing this diet with small wild fruits and invertebrates such as beetles, caterpillars, and ants, which become crucial sources of protein during the breeding season to feed the growing chicks.

Behavior: Is usually observed in pairs or small family groups, displaying mostly terrestrial or low-shrub foraging habits. It moves with small hops on the ground, searching for food among leaf litter. During the breeding season, it becomes highly territorial, and males can be seen singing a melodious, soft, and warbling song from conspicuous perches on thorny bushes to defend their territory. Its flight is undulating and typically covers short distances.

Nesting: The breeding season runs from October to February. It constructs an open-cup nest that is somewhat loose but sturdy, using dry twigs, grass stems, rootlets, and sometimes animal hair to line the inner cup. The nest is typically placed at low heights, between 1.6 and 5 feet (0.5 to 1.5 meters) above the ground, well hidden inside thorny shrubs or low branches of trees. The clutch consists of 2 to 4 eggs, which are pale blue or greenish-white, marked with dark brown and black spots, lines, and scribbles, mostly concentrated at the larger end. Incubation is performed chiefly by the female.

Conservation status: Is classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. Although its global population is not considered threatened, local populations face pressure from habitat loss, fragmentation, and degradation caused by the expansion of agriculture, intensive cattle ranching, and the ongoing deforestation of the dry Chaco forest ecosystem.
