Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Represents a medium-sized passerine bird belonging to the family Thraupidae, measuring approximately 20 to 21 centimeters in length and weighing between 42 and 52 grams. It is distinguished by its bright olive-green upperparts and a slate-grey head adorned with a prominent white supercilium extending behind the eye. The most diagnostic plumage feature is a rich buff throat patch bordered by a thick, well-defined black lateral stripe that forms an incomplete chest collar. The breast and flanks are a medium grey, transitioning to a light tawny or buff coloration on the lower belly and undertail coverts. It features a heavy, robust, and slightly curved blackish bill suited for a varied diet. The sexes look alike, displaying no significant sexual dimorphism, whereas juvenile individuals show duller overall coloration and less defined throat patterns.

Geographical distribution: This taxon is widely distributed throughout the Neotropical region, spanning from southeastern Mexico down through Central America (including countries such as Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica, and Panama) into South America. In the South American continent, its range encompasses the eastern slopes of the Andes across Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia, extending eastwards across vast territories of Brazil (primarily the Amazon basin and Atlantic forest) to its southernmost limits in northern Paraguay.

Habitat: Inhabits the margins and ecotones of humid tropical forests, secondary growth woodlands, dense shrubbery, clearings, and agricultural areas such as shaded coffee plantations. While it is primarily found in humid lowlands below 1500 meters above sea level, it can occasionally be encountered in submontane zones up to 2200 meters of elevation. It avoids the interior canopy of dense, primary forests, showing a marked preference for disturbed areas and edge habitats where shrubby understory vegetation is abundant and dense.

Feeding: Possesses a primarily omnivorous diet with a strong herbivorous inclination, focusing heavily on plant matter. It feeds on various wild fruits, berries, seeds, flower buds, and nectar extracted from diverse shrub and tree species. During the breeding season, it supplements this diet by foraging for insects such as beetles, grasshoppers, and caterpillars, as well as spiders and other small invertebrates, providing essential protein for egg production and growing nestlings.

Behavior: Typically found singly or in monogamous pairs, moving quietly through the lower and middle strata of the vegetation, though males will regularly ascend to exposed perches to sing. The song is a loud, melodic, and fluid series of sweet whistled phrases, delivered frequently during the early morning hours to assert territorial boundaries. Although relatively large, it is a somewhat shy species that quickly retreats into thick cover when disturbed, though it may occasionally join mixed-species foraging flocks in search of fruiting trees.

Nesting: The breeding cycle begins with the construction of a bulky, cup-shaped nest, loosely woven by both parents using dry twigs, broad leaves, rootlets, and moss. This nest is typically placed low in dense vegetation, between 1 and 3 meters above the ground, well hidden from potential predators. The clutch consists of 2 to 3 pale blue or greenish-blue eggs, marked with dark brown or black squiggles and spots concentrated at the larger end. Incubation is performed chiefly by the female for about 13 to 14 days, after which both parents actively participate in feeding and defending the nestlings until they fledge approximately two weeks after hatching.

Conservation status: Classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. This conservation rating is justified by its exceptionally vast geographic range, large and stable population trend, and high tolerance for habitat degradation, as the species thrives in edge habitats and secondary growth forests, meaning it is not currently threatened by regional deforestation trends that impact interior forest specialists.
