Description


Is a medium-sized bird of prey with a slender body, long wings, and remarkable adaptations for life in freshwater wetlands. It measures approximately 36–48 cm (14–19 in) in length, with a wingspan that may exceed one meter. Its most distinctive feature is the long, thin, strongly hooked bill, an extraordinary adaptation that allows it to extract aquatic snails from their shells with exceptional precision. The species exhibits pronounced sexual dimorphism. Adult males are predominantly dark slate-gray, with black flight feathers and a striking bright red cere and bill base that contrast sharply with the black tip of the bill. Females are dark brown overall, with pale streaking on the head, neck, and breast, while the underparts are buff to cream-colored with abundant brown streaks. Juveniles resemble adult females but display a more uniform plumage with less defined markings. The legs are relatively long and yellowish to orange, equipped with sharp talons adapted for capturing prey among floating aquatic vegetation. In flight, it holds its wings in a shallow dihedral and glides gracefully with slow wingbeats while carefully scanning the water´s surface below.

Geographic Distribution: Occurs across a broad range extending from the southeastern United States, especially Florida, south through Mexico, Central America, and much of South America. Its distribution includes Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and northern and central Argentina, where it occupies a variety of wetland ecosystems. In Argentina it is most common in the northeastern and east-central regions, including the Iberá Wetlands and the floodplains of the country´s major rivers. Many populations undertake seasonal movements closely associated with changes in water levels and the availability of their primary prey. Birds may temporarily abandon wetlands affected by prolonged droughts and rapidly recolonize areas once favorable hydrological conditions return.

Habitat: Inhabits primarily marshes, swamps, shallow lakes, ponds, floodplains, rice fields, reservoirs, canals, and other freshwater wetlands, particularly those containing abundant floating and emergent vegetation. It shows a strong preference for habitats supporting large populations of apple snails of the genus Pomacea, which constitute the cornerstone of its diet. The species also utilizes seasonally flooded grasslands, slow-flowing rivers, and temporary wetlands created by seasonal rainfall. Throughout the year it remains closely associated with aquatic environments, frequently using isolated trees, shrubs, fence posts, and utility poles as lookout perches and nesting sites. The abundance and quality of wetlands largely determine both its local distribution and population density.

Diet: Has a highly specialized feeding ecology, representing one of the most remarkable examples of dietary specialization among New World raptors. Its diet consists almost entirely of freshwater apple snails, particularly species belonging to the genus Pomacea. Its uniquely shaped bill allows it to insert the lower mandible into the shell opening and delicately extract the snail without breaking the shell. This feeding technique requires considerable precision and is gradually perfected by young birds through experience. Although exceptionally rare, individuals may occasionally consume other mollusks, small crustaceans, aquatic insects, amphibians, or small fish when snails become temporarily scarce. The abundance of apple snails directly influences breeding success, survival rates, and seasonal movements, making the species highly dependent on healthy wetland ecosystems.

Behavior: Is generally solitary or found in pairs, although concentrations of dozens or even hundreds of individuals may gather where food is particularly abundant or at communal roosting sites. Much of the day is spent flying slowly over wetlands at low altitude, carefully inspecting floating vegetation in search of snails. Its flight is light, graceful, and highly maneuverable, combining gliding with slow wingbeats that enable prolonged searches over extensive marshes. Once prey is detected, it descends swiftly to seize the snail with its talons before carrying it to a perch where it is skillfully extracted from the shell. Vocalizations consist mainly of high-pitched whistles and squealing calls, heard most frequently during territorial interactions and the breeding season. The species is closely tied to the natural dynamics of wetlands, adjusting its movements and daily activities in response to seasonal changes in water levels and prey availability.

Breeding: Breeding generally coincides with periods of high water levels and abundant food, although the exact timing varies geographically according to rainfall patterns. The nest is a relatively small platform constructed from twigs, reeds, and other aquatic vegetation, usually placed in shrubs, small trees, or dense emergent vegetation standing above shallow water. Pairs frequently reuse or refurbish nests from previous breeding seasons. A typical clutch consists of two to four eggs, usually white to cream-colored with brown markings. Both adults share incubation duties for approximately four weeks and subsequently cooperate in feeding, protecting, and raising the chicks. Young birds remain in the nest for several weeks before fledging and continue to depend on their parents while mastering the complex feeding technique required to remove snails from their shells efficiently.

Conservation Status: The species is currently classified globally as Least Concern (LC) because of its wide geographic distribution and relatively large overall population. Nevertheless, it is highly sensitive to wetland degradation, particularly where environmental changes reduce the abundance of freshwater apple snails. Wetland drainage, water pollution, dam construction, altered hydrological regimes, intensive pesticide use, and the destruction of marsh vegetation represent significant threats in various parts of its range. Conversely, the spread of certain invasive apple snail species has produced complex ecological effects, increasing food availability in some regions while simultaneously disrupting native wetland ecosystems. The long-term conservation of this distinctive raptor depends on the protection and restoration of healthy wetlands, making it an excellent indicator of wetland ecosystem health because of its close ecological dependence on both aquatic habitats and freshwater mollusk populations.
