Characterized by a robust and stocky body, this amphibian typically reaches a snout-vent length of 60 to 120 millimeters, with adult females being significantly larger than males. Its skin is highly glandular and covered with prominent, keratinized spinose warts that give the species its characteristic rough texture. Dorsal coloration is remarkably polymorphic, varying from yellowish-brown and light gray to dark olive green, often mottled with irregular dark patches, while the venter is a paler creamy white with dark gray speckling. It features prominent, oval-shaped parotoid glands located behind large eyes with horizontal pupils and striking golden irises.
Geographical distribution: Occurs widely across the rugged terrain of the Andean mountain range in South America. Its range extends from central and southern Peru, through western Bolivia, down to the Andean and sub-Andean regions of Argentina (reaching as far south as Mendoza and Neuquén provinces) and northern to central Chile (extending to the Coquimbo region). This species thrives at extraordinary elevations, spanning an altitudinal gradient from 1,000 up to over 4,500 meters above sea level, making it one of the highest-dwelling amphibians in the world.
Habitat: Inhabits extreme high-altitude ecosystems characterized by drastic temperature fluctuations and arid conditions. It is deeply associated with the puna, paramo, high-Andean grasslands, and montane scrublands. Despite the dryness of these environments, it remains restricted to areas near aquatic resources such as bofedales (high-altitude peat bogs), slow-flowing streams, alpine lagoons, irrigation ditches, and damp agricultural pastures, utilizing stones and deep soil crevices to shelter from intense solar radiation and nocturnal freezing.
Feeding: Behaves as an opportunistic and generalist insectivore, preying on a diverse array of terrestrial invertebrates. The diet consists primarily of coleopterans (beetles), himenopterans (ants and wasps), hemipterans, dipterans, spiders, and occasionally small snails or earthworms. Employing a sit-and-wait foraging strategy, it relies on its excellent vision to detect movement and its highly sticky, projectile tongue to rapidly capture prey.
Behavior: Demonstrates remarkable ecological adaptability, adjusting its activity patterns to cope with the harsh alpine climate. While populations at lower altitudes are predominantly nocturnal, those at extreme elevations exhibit significant diurnal activity to maximize basking and thermoregulation during the warmer hours of the day. To survive the freezing temperatures of the southern winter, it undergoes a period of brumation, retreating deep into subterranean burrows or beneath large rocks that buffer against frost.
Reproduction: Takes place seasonally, typically triggered by the arrival of the spring and summer rains or glacial meltwaters between October and March. Males gather in shallow, slow-moving water bodies and produce low-pitched, repetitive advertisement calls to attract mates. The mating process involves axillary amplexus, after which the female releases long, gelatinous strings containing between 2,000 and 10,000 dark eggs, securing them to submerged vegetation or on the muddy substrate. Larval development and metamorphosis are exceptionally rapid, enabling tadpoles to transform before ephemeral pools dry up.
Conservation status: Classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List due to its extensive geographical distribution, large population sizes, and tolerance to moderate habitat modification. Nevertheless, localized populations face mounting pressures from habitat degradation caused by livestock overgrazing, water contamination from agricultural runoff and mining, climate change-induced drying of wetlands, and the potential threat of the chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis.
