Description

Characterized by a robust, elongated, and entirely scaleless body, this taxon exhibits a typical siluriform morphology designed for benthic life. It features a broad, flattened head equipped with three pairs of sensory barbels (one long maxillary pair extending past the pectoral fin base and two shorter mental pairs) which are crucial for detecting prey in murky waters. The adipose fin is remarkably long and prominent, running along a major portion of the posterior dorsal profile. Its body coloration is highly adaptable, ranging from dark gray to olive-brown on the dorsal surface, transitioning to a lighter silvery shade on the flanks, and ending in a cream-colored or yellowish belly. The pectoral and dorsal fins are armed with sharp, rigid spines capable of inflicting painful wounds as a defense mechanism against predators. Adult specimens commonly measure between 11.8 and 19.6 inches in length, weighing between 3.3 and 6.6 pounds, though exceptional individuals can exceed these measurements.

Geographical distribution: This species is widely distributed throughout the Neotropical region, spanning from southern Mexico and Central America down to central Argentina. It occupies major South American river systems, including the Amazon, Orinoco, Paraná, Paraguay, and Uruguay basins, making it one of the most widely distributed freshwater catfish on the continent.

Habitat: Primarily inhabits slow-moving or standing freshwater systems, such as rivers, lagoons, creeks, and wetlands. It shows a strong preference for benthic environments characterized by muddy, sandy, or organic debris-rich substrates where it can easily blend into the surroundings. It is highly adaptable to physical-chemical variations, tolerating water temperatures ranging from 59 °F to 82 °F and surviving in environments with low oxygen concentrations.

Feeding: Exhibits an opportunistic omnivorous diet with a strong carnivorous tendency. Feeding habits shift as the fish matures; juveniles feed mainly on aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, and organic detritus, whereas mature adults target larger prey, including smaller fish, freshwater crabs, mollusks, and terrestrial plant material that falls into the water. Its highly developed chemical and tactile senses allow it to forage successfully in complete darkness.

Behavior: Demonstrates strictly nocturnal and crepuscular habits. During the day, it remains completely inactive, sheltering under submerged logs, rocky crevices, or dense aquatic vegetation to evade predators. At dusk, it becomes highly active, patrolling the riverbed in search of food. It is generally a solitary fish, showing territorial tendencies and avoiding conspecific aggregations except during the spawning season.

Reproduction: Classified as an oviparous species with seasonal reproduction, heavily influenced by rising water temperatures and the onset of the rainy season during spring and summer. Adult individuals undergo short upstream migrations to shallow, vegetation-rich flooded areas suitable for spawning. Fertilization is external; females release thousands of adhesive, demersal eggs that stick to aquatic vegetation or rocky substrates, which are then fertilized by the males. This species does not exhibit parental care, leaving the survival of the embryos and larvae entirely dependent on the structural complexity of the spawning habitat.

Conservation status: Classified as Least Concern (LC) on global ecological databases due to its wide distribution, high reproductive capacity, and ecological plasticity. Nonetheless, localized populations face threats from habitat degradation, water pollution, dam construction that blocks migration routes, and unregulated artisanal and recreational fishing.
