Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Is a highly distinctive neotropical representative of the family Ramphastidae, characterized by its medium body size, reaching an average length of 40 to 48 centimeters and a body mass ranging between 265 and 400 grams. The dorsal plumage, crown, and hindneck are uniformly glossy black, creating a dramatic contrast with the bright yellow-orange throat and upper breast. The lower breast and abdomen feature a vibrant crimson red patch, which is a defining diagnostic feature of the species. Its bill is relatively short for the genus, measuring around 7 to 10 centimeters, and exhibits an atypical pale greenish-yellow coloration with a dark transverse band at the base and serrated red margins. The bare skin around the eyes is of a striking intense red hue, highlighting the light blue or greenish-blue iris. Sexual dimorphism is minimal, although males tend to exhibit slightly larger body dimensions and a longer, more robust bill structure.

Geographical distribution: Occurs as an endemic resident of the eastern and southern regions of South America. Its geographic range is restricted primarily to southeastern and southern Brazil (extending from southern Bahia down to Rio Grande do Sul), eastern Paraguay, and the far northeastern Argentina, particularly within the Misiones province.

Habitat: Primarily inhabits the wet, evergreen environments of the Atlantic Forest biome. It can be found in lowland tropical and subtropical forests as well as montane cloud forests at elevations reaching up to 1,500 meters above sea level. Although it prefers mature, undisturbed forest canopies, it demonstrates a degree of adaptability, occasionally utilizing secondary growth forests, gallery forests, and fruit orchards with adequate canopy cover.

Feeding: Exhibits an omnivorous diet with a strong emphasis on frugivory. It feeds on a wide variety of native forest fruits, showing a strong preference for the berries of palms such as Euterpe edulis, as well as wild figs (Ficus spp.) and fruits belonging to the Lauraceae and Myrtaceae families. To supplement its nutritional requirements, especially during the breeding season, it actively preys on large insects, spiders, small lizards, tree frogs, and the eggs and nestlings of smaller avian species.

Behavior: Typically ranges in pairs or small family groups of up to ten individuals that travel through the upper strata of the forest. It is not an long-distance flyer, relying instead on short, undulating flights and agile hops between branches in the canopy. It possesses a distinctive vocal repertoire, consisting of a dry, repetitive, frog-like croaking sound used to maintain contact with flock members. Seasonal altitudinal migrations are common, with populations moving to lower, warmer coastal valleys during the austral winter months in response to local food scarcity.

Nesting: Utilizes natural cavities in mature trees or abandoned nesting holes of large woodpecker species for its reproductive cycle. No nesting material is added, and the eggs are laid directly on the decaying wood dust at the bottom of the hollow. The clutch typically consists of 2 to 4 white eggs, incubated by both male and female parents for an estimated period of 16 to 19 days. The altricial chicks are born blind and featherless, depending entirely on parental care for 40 to 50 days before they are fully fledged and ready to leave the nest.

Conservation status: Classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. Although the species remains relatively common within protected areas, its long-term survival is threatened by intense habitat fragmentation within the Atlantic Forest and ongoing pressure from the illegal wildlife trade, where it is targeted for its striking appearance.
