Description


Belonging to the family Noctuidae, this nocturnal lepidopteran is widely recognized in its larval stage for its economic impact on agriculture in the Southern Cone of South America and its highly specialized adaptive morphology.

It exhibits a distinct dimorphism throughout its evolutionary stages. The adults are nocturnal moths with a wingspan of 28 to 35 millimeters, whose forewings display dark or grayish-brown shades, adorned with a conspicuous, shiny silvery-white stigma in the central area that resembles the Greek letter nu or an incomplete metallic hook. The hindwings are pale brown with diffuse, darker margins. The larvae, commonly known as sunflower loopers or measuring worms, reach a length of 30 to 35 millimeters in their final instar; their bodies are a bright light green color, marked with fine white longitudinal stripes along the dorsum and lateral areas. They lack the first two pairs of abdominal prolegs on segments three and four, which reduces their abdominal prolegs to only three pairs, forcing them to arch their bodies in a distinctive looping motion when walking.

Geographical distribution: It is broadly distributed across the South American continent, with established and dense populations in Argentina (particularly in the Pampas and central agricultural regions), Brazil (predominantly in the southern and southeastern states), Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia, and specific agricultural valleys in Chile. Its dispersal dynamics are closely linked to the distribution of extensive agricultural crops and temperate to subtropical climate zones.

Habitat: It primarily inhabits lowland agroecosystems, extensive monoculture fields, cultivated pastures, roadside margins colonized by herbaceous weeds, and natural grasslands. Its ecological plasticity allows it to rapidly colonize human-modified environments, finding refuge in commercial industrial crops, diverse horticultural fields, and areas dominated by ruderal vegetation.

Feeding: It is highly polyphagous during its larval stage, consuming the foliage of a wide variety of dicotyledonous plants. It constitutes one of the major defoliating pests in high-value commercial crops such as soybeans, sunflowers, alfalfa, clover, flax, and various vegetable crops belonging to the Fabaceae and Asteraceae families. In contrast, adults possess a siphoning mouthpart (proboscis) and feed exclusively on flower nectar from wild and cultivated flora to fuel their high-energy flights.

Behavior: It displays strong nocturnal and crepuscular activity during its adult stage, being highly attracted to artificial light sources. During the day, adults remain concealed within dense crop foliage or leaf litter to evade predators. The larvae are solitary feeders, occupying the undersides of leaves; when disturbed or threatened by a predator, they drop from the foliage while suspended by a protective silk thread or stiffen to mimic plant petioles, blending in with the background. Their characteristic looping locomotion is a direct consequence of their anatomical adaptation regarding the reduced number of abdominal prolegs.

Reproduction: It undergoes a complete holometabolous life cycle, which is highly dependent on ambient temperatures. Females release species-specific sex pheromones to attract males during the night. Following copulation, the female deposits her eggs singly or in small clusters on the undersides of host plant leaves, with a lifetime fecundity ranging between 500 and 1000 eggs. These hemispherical, ribbed eggs are pale green and hatch within 3 to 5 days under optimal conditions, giving rise to larvae that develop through five to six instars. Pupation takes place within a loose white silk cocoon woven by the larva on the underside of dry leaves or crop debris, where it completes metamorphosis before emerging as a mature adult.

Conservation status: It is not listed or evaluated on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List, given its status as an abundant and widespread agricultural pest. Instead of being threatened, its population dynamics are continuously monitored through integrated pest management systems, which include chemical insecticides, biological control using parasitoids, and transgenic crops expressing insecticidal proteins to limit its impact on agricultural yields.
