Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

This is a medium-sized avian taxon measuring between 25 and 26 centimeters in total length and weighing approximately 60 to 80 grams. The plumage is dominantly bright green, distinguished by its prominent olive-green cheeks and a crown that ranges from dull brown to dark gray. The chest features a highly characteristic scaly pattern, consisting of buffy-gray feathers edged with darker margins. A distinct maroon-red patch is visible on the center of the abdomen, contrasting sharply with the deep blue coloration of the primary flight feathers. It possesses a long, tapered dull-red tail, a highly visible white bare orbital ring around the eyes, and a robust dark gray bill.

Geographical distribution: This species is endemic to the central-interior regions of South America. Its range encompasses northern and eastern Bolivia, extending eastwards into southwestern Brazil, specifically within the states of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul. Its distribution also reaches south into northern Paraguay (the Chaco region) and extends into northwestern Argentina, occupying the mountain slopes of Salta, Jujuy, Tucumán, and northern Catamarca.

Habitat: It colonizes diverse woodland environments, ranging from the dry, deciduous forests of the Chaco to the humid montane forests of the Yungas, at elevations up to 2900 meters above sea level. It is also frequently found in gallery forests, transitional subtropical forests, secondary growth areas, and the wooded savannas of the Pantanal. It exhibits a strong preference for the middle and upper canopy layer, which offers protection against predators and rich foraging opportunities.

Feeding: The diet is primarily herbivorous and frugivorous, consisting of a wide variety of seeds, fleshy fruits, flowers, nectar, and tender leaf buds. It actively feeds on native fruits from genera such as Ficus, Cecropia, and Inga. Utilizing its powerful bill, it can easily crack open hard-shelled seeds, acting alternately as a seed predator and a seed disperser within its ecological community, adapting its foraging behavior to seasonal food availability.

Behavior: Highly gregarious, this bird typically travels in active, social flocks of 10 to 20 individuals, although larger congregations may form during the non-breeding season around abundant food sources. While in flight, the flocks are highly conspicuous due to their continuous, harsh vocalizations; however, they become remarkably silent and difficult to spot once they settle in the canopy, relying on their green plumage for effective camouflage. They also utilize tree cavities for communal roosting throughout the year.

Nesting: It relies on pre-existing cavities in living or dead tree trunks for reproduction, frequently utilizing hollows created by wood decay or abandoned nests of woodpeckers (Picidae). The breeding season typically runs from October to March. Females lay a clutch of 4 to 6 white, elliptical eggs, which they incubate solely for a period of 22 to 25 days. During this period, the male vigorously defends the nesting territory and provides food to the female via regurgitation. The altricial chicks hatch blind and featherless, remaining in the safety of the nest cavity for approximately 50 days before fledging and receiving continued parental care.

Conservation status: It is currently classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, reflecting its extensive geographical range and relatively stable global population. However, localized populations suffer from threats associated with habitat fragmentation driven by agricultural expansion and illegal trapping for the international pet trade, which keeps the species listed under CITES Appendix II to regulate its commercial exploitation.
