This is a small lepidopteran taxon characterized by a robust body and comparatively short, broad wings typical of the family Hesperiidae. The wingspan of this species ranges from 18 to 24 millimeters. The dorsal surface of the wings features a dark brown or blackish ground color, adorned with an intricate pattern of white quadrangular spots that create a checkered appearance. The ventral side of the hindwings is considerably paler, varying from light gray to yellowish-brown, marked with faint olive-gray transverse bands and small marginal white dots. The antennae terminate in a distinct hooked club, a key morphological feature of skipper butterflies, while the eyes are large, dark, and highly prominent.
Geographical distribution: This insect is widely distributed throughout the Neotropical region, with a range extending across central and southern South America. It is frequently recorded in countries such as Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia, and northern Argentina. Its geographic range encompasses both subtropical and temperate zones, showing a broad altitudinal tolerance from coastal lowlands up to approximately 1500 meters above sea level.
Habitat: This species primarily occupies open and transitional ecosystems. It is commonly found in native grasslands, forest clearings, trail edges, savannas, pastures, and disturbed anthropized environments such as urban gardens and parks. It shows a strong preference for sunny biotopes with high solar exposure and a rich abundance of plants from the Malvaceae family, which serve as essential developmental hosts.
Feeding: The diet of this species undergoes a complete transition between developmental stages. As larvae, they are specialized herbivores that feed exclusively on the foliage of host plants within the Malvaceae family, exhibiting a strong preference for genera like Sida, Malvastrum, and Modiola. Adult butterflies are nectarivorous, utilizing their long proboscis to feed on small herbaceous flowers, particularly those belonging to the Asteraceae and Verbenaceae families, which provide the high-energy sugars needed for their rapid flight.
Behavior: This butterfly is known for its extremely fast, erratic, and low-to-the-ground flight pattern, rarely rising more than one meter above the vegetation. Males are highly territorial and patrol open patches of soil or rocks, where they engage in basking behavior to regulate their body temperature using solar radiation. They aggressively defend these perches from intruding males and other small insects to secure mating opportunities.
Reproduction: The reproductive cycle begins with a rapid, spiraling aerial courtship initiated by the male. Following successful copulation, the female deposits her tiny, pale green or whitish eggs individually on the underside of the host plant´s leaves. Upon hatching, the young larva spins a protective silk shelter by folding the edge of a leaf, emerging primarily at night to feed. After passing through several larval instars, pupation takes place inside this folded leaf shelter or within the leaf litter on the ground, culminating in the emergence of the adult butterfly.
Conservation status: This taxon is currently not assessed globally by the IUCN, as it remains widespread and common throughout its range, benefiting from the abundance of its larval food plants which often thrive in human-modified landscapes. Nonetheless, local populations face threats from habitat fragmentation, intensive agricultural pesticide application, and urban sprawl, which eliminate native grasslands and crucial nectar sources.
