Description


Characterized by its slender yet robust build, this medium-sized passerine measures between 24 to 25 centimeters (approximately 9.5 inches) in length and weighs around 75 to 85 grams. The plumage exhibits a striking and diagnostic contrast: the upperparts, including the crown, back, wings, and tail, are a uniform dark olive-brown, while the entire underparts, from the throat down through the breast, belly, and underwing coverts, are a brilliant, vivid yellow. No sexual dimorphism is present, as both sexes share the exact same coloration and size. The bill is long, sharply pointed, and purplish-black, specialized for probing soil. The legs are strong and dark gray, suited for terrestrial locomotion, and the eyes feature a deep dark brown iris.

Presents a striking, high-contrast appearance that makes it easily identifiable in the field. Its wings are relatively short and rounded, providing excellent maneuverability when flushing from dense grass. In flight, the bright yellow underwing coverts flash conspicuously, serving as a visual signal to other members of the flock.

Geographical distribution: Endemic to the Southern Cone of South America, its range stretches across northeastern Argentina (from the Chaco region down through the Buenos Aires province to northern Patagonia), throughout the entire territory of Uruguay, across the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil, and into the southeastern moist grasslands of Paraguay.

Habitat: Inhabits damp and open terrestrial environments, showing a strong affinity for wet grasslands, marshes, flooded savannas, lake borders, and agricultural fields such as pastures. It is highly associated with dense herbaceous vegetation, particularly beds of reeds, rushes, and thistles, which provide crucial shelter and breeding grounds in lowland areas generally situated below 1,000 meters above sea level.

Feeding: Maintains an omnivorous diet with a pronounced preference for invertebrates and seeds. It feeds primarily on the ground in cohesive groups, using its strong bill to dig, probe, and flip debris. Its diet consists of a wide array of insects, including beetles, caterpillars, grasshoppers, and spiders, alongside earthworms. During winter and agricultural planting seasons, it opportunistically consumes wild grass seeds, spilled cereal grains (such as wheat and corn), and tender vegetative shoots.

Behavior: Highly gregarious throughout the year, this species forms large flocks that can range from dozens to hundreds of individuals, frequently foraging alongside other blackbirds. Its flight is direct and undulating. It is highly vocal, known for its complex, loud, and metallic melodious songs performed in chorus. Individuals frequently perch on prominent lookouts, such as fence posts, fence wires, or tall weeds, to sing and coordinate group movements, displaying active sentinel behavior against predators.

Nesting: Constructs a sturdy, open-cup nest made of dry grass, roots, and twigs, cemented at the base with wet mud or manure, and lined inside with finer plant fibers and animal hair. The nest is typically hidden low to the ground in dense vegetation like thistles or reeds. The female lays 4 to 5 eggs, which are pale pinkish-white speckled with reddish-brown and lilac spots. This species is famous for its cooperative breeding system, where helper birds assist the breeding pair in feeding and defending the nestlings. The nests are a primary target for brood parasitism by the Shiny Cowbird (Molothrus bonariensis).

Conservation status: Categorized as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. While its global population is considered stable and it remains common across its range, localized threats include the degradation of wetlands and native grasslands caused by intensive agricultural conversion, afforestation, and urban development.
