Description


This is a large and robust representative of the family Procellariidae, characterized by a uniform dark chocolate-brown to sooty-black plumage covering its entire body. A key diagnostic feature is the white patch on the chin, although its size is highly variable and can sometimes be completely absent in certain individuals. Its massive, heavy bill is pale yellow or horn-colored, contrasting sharply with black lines along the plate sutures and featuring prominent, well-developed nasal tubes. The legs and large webbed feet are entirely black. This species has a wingspan ranging from 134 to 147 centimeters, a total body length of 51 to 58 centimeters, and a body mass of 1000 to 1400 grams, making it one of the heaviest petrels in its genus, built for powerful oceanic flight across extreme marine environments.

Geographical distribution: It is widely distributed throughout the cold-temperate waters of the Southern Ocean. Breeding is restricted to isolated subantarctic islands, including South Georgia, Kerguelen, Crozet, Prince Edward, Marion, Campbell, Auckland, Antipodes, and the Falkland Islands. During the non-breeding season, it undertakes extensive circumpolar migrations, foraging northward into subtropical waters along the Humboldt Current off Chile and Peru, the Benguela Current off southwestern Africa, and deep oceanic waters off southern Australia and New Zealand.

Habitat: This bird is strictly pelagic outside of the breeding season, spending most of its life over deep waters, continental slopes, and upwelling zones where marine productivity is highest. During the nesting season, it returns to land, occupying steep coastal slopes and boggy valleys of subantarctic islands. It specifically selects areas with deep soil covered by dense tussock grass (Poa flabellata), which provides the structural stability needed for excavating nesting burrows.

Feeding: It has an opportunistic and diverse diet, feeding primarily on cephalopods (such as squid of the families Histioteuthidae and Ommastrephidae), mesopelagic fish, and crustaceans (including Antarctic krill, Euphausia superba). It captures food by seizing prey at the surface, executing short pursuit plunges, or underwater diving up to depths of over ten meters. It is highly notorious for its ship-following behavior, congregating in massive numbers behind commercial trawlers to feed aggressively on fishery discards and offal.

Behavior: Highly gregarious at sea, it frequently associates with other seabirds around rich feeding grounds. It is an exceptional dynamic soarer, utilizing strong winds over the southern waves to glide effortlessly. On land, it exhibits strictly nocturnal behavior at its breeding colonies to reduce the risk of predation by predatory skuas. It is highly vocal, producing a wide array of loud, harsh cackling and rattling calls from inside its subterranean burrows for territory defense and partner recognition.

Nesting: This monogamous seabird exhibits strong long-term pair bonds and high breeding site fidelity. The reproductive cycle begins in October when pairs excavate or repair a subterranean burrow, which can stretch one to three meters deep and ends in a chamber lined with grass. In November or December, the female lays a single white egg. Both parents share incubation duties in long shifts over a period of 57 to 62 days. After hatching, the chick is fed regurgitated stomach oil and semi-digested prey, eventually fledging between April and May after 90 to 100 days of parental care.

Conservation status: It is currently listed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List. The single greatest threat to its population is incidental mortality in longline and trawl fisheries, where birds are hooked and drowned when trying to steal bait. Additionally, breeding colonies face severe pressures from invasive alien species, particularly feral cats and introduced rats (Rattus spp.), which prey heavily on eggs and chicks, alongside the negative impacts of climate change on prey distribution.
