Description


Belongs to a group of highly eusocial hymenopterans characterized by a moderate body size, with adults measuring between 11 and 15 millimeters in length. Its integument exhibits a predominantly dark brown or black coloration, highlighted by distinct ochre-yellow markings on the pronotum, scutellum, and abdominal segments. The head is robust, featuring strong mandibles adapted for masticating plant fibers, and prominent dark compound eyes. The most outstanding physical diagnostic feature of this taxon is the architectural complexity of its aerial nest, which is constructed from chewed wood fibers mixed with saliva, forming a durable, greyish paper-like material. These nests are generally globose or pear-shaped, decorated with external ridges or spine-like projections that help divert rainwater, and can reach impressive dimensions of 30 to 50 centimeters in diameter.

Geographical distribution: Occurs widely across the temperate and subtropical regions of South America. Its presence is consistently documented throughout northeastern and central Argentina, southern Brazil, the entirety of Uruguay, and several regions of Paraguay. It represents an endemic organism of this neotropical zone, demonstrating a highly effective dispersal capability along river basins and forested corridors.

Habitat: Inhabits primarily savannahs, xerophytic woodlands, humid grasslands, and ecotones such as the Humid Chaco and the Pampas ecoregion. Owing to its ecological plasticity, this species successfully colonizes human-modified environments, being frequently recorded in suburban areas, urban parks, commercial forest plantations, and human structures like building eaves, utility poles, and bridges, where it finds stable substrates to suspend its nests shielded from strong winds.

Feeding: Exhibits generalist and opportunistic foraging habits, playing an essential ecological role as a natural biocontrol agent of insect populations. Foraging workers actively hunt lepidopteran caterpillars, coleopteran larvae, and various dipterans, which are macerated and transported back to the nest to feed the growing larvae. Adult wasps feed mainly on easily assimilable carbohydrates, such as flower nectar, tree sap, and aphid honeydew. Notably, this species is known for its ability to store honey in its nest cells, a biological trait rarely observed in non-bee hymenopterans, providing essential energetic reserves during periods of food scarcity.

Behavior: Constitutes a highly organized social species forming populous colonies containing thousands of individuals, organized under a rigid caste system composed of workers and multiple queens. Nest defense is collective and highly aggressive; when threatened, workers release alarm pheromones that trigger coordinated attacks involving painful stings. They utilize complex chemical signals and tactile interactions to organize the foraging of water, wood pulp, and prey. They display diurnal flight activity, which is strongly dependent on ambient temperature fluctuations.

Reproduction: The reproductive cycle and colony founding are characterized by swarm founding or pleometrosis, a typical strategy among neotropical Epiponini wasps. A new colony is not established by a single, solitary queen, but rather by a swarm consisting of numerous workers accompanied by several fertile queens (polygyny) migrating from the parent nest. Once a suitable nesting site is selected, the queens mate with males from other colonies and begin laying eggs in the newly constructed cells. The legless larvae progress through several developmental instars before pupating and emerging as adults, ensuring a continuous supply of workers to sustain the colony.

Conservation status: Currently, this species has not been evaluated (NE) by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Its remarkable resilience to habitat fragmentation and its capacity to thrive in anthropogenic landscapes suggest that its populations are stable and secure, face no immediate extinction threats, and remain common throughout its range.
