The abdomen terminates in a modified ovipositor connected to venom glands, which is utilized for subduing prey and defending the colony.
Geographical distribution: Is widely distributed across the Neotropical region, spanning a vast latitudinal range. Its presence is documented from southern Mexico, extending throughout Central America through countries such as Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama. In South America, it is found extensively in Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and almost the entirety of Brazil (with dense populations in southeastern and midwestern states), reaching its southern limits in northern Argentina and temperate regions of Paraguay.
Habitat: Shows outstanding ecological plasticity, enabling it to colonize diverse ecosystems ranging from lowland tropical rainforests and deciduous dry forests to shrubby savannas like the Brazilian Cerrado. It highly succeeds in anthropogenically altered environments, being very common in agricultural areas, fruit orchards, pastures, suburban gardens, and urban parks, where it finds suitable nesting substrates and abundant foraging opportunities.
Feeding: Functions as a generalist predator and an opportunistic fluid collector. Adult wasps actively forage for carbohydrate sources, such as flower nectar, ripe fruit juices, and honeydew secreted by sap-sucking hemipterans. To feed the developing brood, foragers hunt a wide variety of soft-bodied arthropods, exhibiting a strong preference for lepidopteran caterpillars and dipteran larvae, thereby acting as a crucial biological control agent of agricultural pests.
Behavior: Features a highly complex social organization based on age-dependent division of labor, known as temporal polyethism. Young workers perform in-nest tasks such as cleaning, brood rearing, and nest construction, while older individuals assume the risky role of external foraging. They construct complex, enclosed envelope nests made of a paper-like substance produced by mixing masticated wood fibers with salivary secretions. Colony defense is highly coordinated; when threatened, workers release specialized alarm pheromones that trigger a rapid, collective attack against potential predators.
Reproduction: Eusocial colony dynamics in this species are characterized by polygyny, meaning that a single colony can contain multiple functional queens that simultaneously lay eggs. New colonies are founded strictly through swarm-founding, a cooperative process in which a swarm of workers and several queens leave the maternal colony to establish a new nest site. Queens deposit eggs in individual hexagonal paper cells. Once hatched, larvae are fed progressively (progressive provisioning) by workers via trophallaxis or prey delivery. After completing larval development, workers seal the cell with a silk dome for pupation, from which an adult worker, queen, or male eventually emerges.
Conservation status: Is currently categorized as Not Evaluated (NE) on the IUCN Red List. The species does not face major global threats and remains highly abundant throughout its range. Its high resilience to habitat fragmentation and its beneficial role in controlling herbivorous insect populations ensure stable population dynamics despite ongoing agricultural expansion in the Neotropics.
