Description

Is a social hymenopteran characterized by a slender, robust body with a predominantly matte black or dark brown coloration, occasionally presenting very subtle, faint yellow markings on the head, pronotum, or abdominal segments. Adult individuals typically measure between 10 and 14 millimeters in length. Their membranous wings exhibit a smoky or slightly translucent hue, and they possess powerful mandibles adapted for masticating plant fibers and crushing prey. The body surface is covered with a fine, microscopic pubescence, giving the insect a distinctive velvety or dull appearance that helps distinguish it from close relatives.

Geographical distribution: Occurs widely across the Neotropical region of South America. It has been extensively documented in countries such as Brazil, Argentina (especially in the northern and central regions), Paraguay, Uruguay, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia. It is recognized as one of the most common and widely distributed social wasps within these territories.

Habitat: Shows outstanding ecological adaptability, inhabiting a diverse range of ecosystems. It is frequently found in open woodlands, savannas like the Cerrado, grasslands, forest edges, and agricultural landscapes. Additionally, this species is highly synanthropic, frequently colonizing urban and suburban environments where it exploits human-made structures, including house eaves, roofs, and bridges, as nesting sites.

Feeding: Exhibits an omnivorous and generalist diet. Adult wasps primarily feed on carbohydrates to sustain their high metabolic demands, consuming flower nectar, ripe fruit juices, plant sap, and honeydew excreted by hemipterans. Conversely, they forage for protein by preying on a wide variety of soft-bodied invertebrates, focusing heavily on lepidopteran larvae (caterpillars) and dipterans. Workers masticate the captured prey into a dense protein paste, which they transport back to the colony to feed the developing larvae.

Behavior: Operates as a highly organized social insect living in colonies characterized by division of labor and caste systems. Unlike some other social wasps, it is a swarm-founding species belonging to the tribe Epiponini, meaning new colonies are established by coordinated swarms of multiple queens and workers rather than a solitary queen. They exhibit coordinated defense mechanisms, aggressively defending their nests with painful stings if disturbed. This species plays an essential ecological role as an agricultural pest predator, significantly reducing populations of destructive crop pests.

Reproduction: Involves a polygynous system, where a single active colony typically hosts multiple fertile queens reproducing simultaneously. The colony constructs a complex, enclosed nest using masticated woody plant fibers mixed with oral secretions, producing a durable paper-like carton. These nests are structured with multiple horizontal combs enclosed in a protective external envelope with a small entrance at the bottom. Queens deposit single eggs into individual cells. The larvae are fed progressively by workers until they spin a silken cap to pupate, eventually emerging as adult workers, males, or new queens.

Conservation status: Has not been officially assessed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and is therefore not listed on any global red lists. Because of its vast geographic range, high population densities, and excellent tolerance to anthropogenic habitat modification, the species is considered abundant, stable, and under no immediate conservation threat.
