This insect exhibits an elongated and robust body profile characteristic of eusocial paper wasps. It measures between 14 and 18 millimeters in length. Its general coloration consists of a base of dark brown to black, contrasted by prominent bright yellow or reddish-brown markings on the clypeus, pronotum, metanotum, and the margins of the abdominal tergites. The wings are characterized by an infuscated, smoky appearance with a noticeably darker anterior edge. The antennae are dark at the base and turn lighter, almost ferruginous, toward the tips. It possesses powerful chewing mouthparts and slender, long legs with claws adapted for gripping plant surfaces.
Geographical distribution: It is widely distributed across the temperate and subtropical zones of South America. Its presence is highly documented in Southern and Southeastern Brazil, including states like Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Paraná, and São Paulo. The distribution range also extends into central and northern Argentina (reaching provinces such as Buenos Aires, Entre Ríos, and Santa Fe), throughout Uruguay, and the eastern portion of Paraguay, where it stands as one of the most common paper wasp species.
Habitat: This wasp occupies a diverse range of environments, showing a marked preference for forest edges, shrubby savannas, grasslands, and the ecological zones of the Pampas biome. As a highly synanthropic species, it easily adapts to urban and suburban landscapes, frequently choosing human-made structures such as building eaves, window frames, and wooden sheds for colony establishment, in addition to colonizing public parks, residential gardens, and agricultural fields.
Feeding: The diet of this species is highly specialized depending on the life stage. Adult individuals are primarily glucophagous, relying on sugar-rich sources such as flower nectar, tree sap, ripe fruit juices, and honeydew excreted by aphids. Conversely, the larvae are strictly carnivorous and depend on protein. Adult workers function as active predators, hunting down various insects, mainly lepidopteran caterpillars, beetle larvae, and other soft-bodied insects, which they masticate into a moist food bolus to feed the developing brood in the nest.
Behavior: It is a social insect that lives in colonies organized around a distinct division of labor. Although morphological differences between queens and workers are minimal, a functional hierarchy is maintained through physical dominance and aggressive behavioral displays rather than pheromonal control. Foraging and maintenance activities occur during the warmest hours of the day. While individuals are generally non-aggressive when foraging away from the nest, they exhibit intense defensive behaviors and will aggressively attack and sting to protect their colony if it is disturbed or threatened.
Reproduction: The colony cycle begins annually in the southern hemisphere´s spring, when a fertilized queen (foundress), or occasionally a group of co-foundresses under pleometrosis, initiates colony construction. The structure is built by chewing weathered wood fibers mixed with saliva to produce a greyish, paper-like pulp. They construct an open, single-comb nest suspended by a strong central petiole. The foundress deposits eggs into individual cells and rears the first batch of larvae. Once these pupate and emerge as sterile female workers, they assume foraging duties. In late summer, reproductive males and future queens are produced, leaving the colony to engage in a nuptial flight. After mating, males die, while fertilized females seek secure, sheltered crevices to undergo winter diapause.
Conservation status: This species has not been officially evaluated by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and does not hold a specific status on the Red List. However, it is recognized as an abundant and widespread species with highly stable populations. Its ecological flexibility and outstanding capacity to thrive in human-modified environments suggest that it faces no significant conservation threats in the foreseeable future.
