Description


This is a relatively large, robustly built shorebird, characterized by a body length of 10.6 to 12.2 inches (27 to 31 cm) and a wingspan spanning 28 to 32.7 inches (71 to 83 cm). It features a prominent rounded head, large dark black eyes, and a short, stout, black bill. It displays a spectacular seasonal dimorphism. During the breeding season, its breeding plumage showcases a striking solid black face, throat, breast, and belly, sharply bordered by a stark white stripe that curves down the sides of the neck and chest, while the upperparts are beautifully spangled with black and white checkers. In non-breeding plumage, it transitions to a drabber pale greyish-brown above and white below, with subtle streaking. A definitive diagnostic feature of Pluvialis squatarola visible during flight in all plumages is the presence of contrasting jet-black axillaries under its wings.

Geographical distribution: This species possesses a highly cosmopolitan, circumpolar distribution, acting as one of the most remarkable long-distance migratory birds on Earth. Its nesting territories are confined to the high Arctic regions of the Northern Hemisphere, spanning northern Alaska, arctic Canada, and the northernmost coastlines of Eurasia from Scandinavia through northern Siberia. During the autumn, it undertakes vast transhemispheric migrations to winter along the temperate and tropical coastlines of North America, South America (reaching as far south as Tierra del Fuego), western and southern Africa, coastal Asia, western Europe, and the islands of Oceania and Australia.

Habitat: During the nesting season, it is strictly associated with the dry Arctic tundra, selecting nesting sites on stony ridges, dry slopes, lichen-dominated dry plateaus, and heathlands, generally avoiding overly wet bogs. Conversely, during the non-breeding and migratory phases, its habitat choice shifts entirely to marine coastal ecosystems. It is primarily found on sandy beaches, tidal mudflats, estuaries, saltmarshes, mangrove edges, and shallow saline lagoons. It is exceptionally rare to encounter this species in inland freshwater wetlands or far from marine influences.

Feeding: It utilizes a highly visual foraging strategy based on a characteristic "run-and-pause" motion to detect and capture surface prey. Its diet is predatory and opportunistic, varying greatly by region. On coastal wintering grounds, it feeds extensively on polychaete worms, small marine mollusks such as bivalves and gastropods, and various crustaceans like small crabs and amphipods. On its Arctic breeding grounds, its diet shifts to a predominantly insectivorous regimen, focusing on terrestrial insects (beetles, flies, and their larvae), spiders, and occasionally plant material such as seeds and wild berries.

Behavior: It is renowned for its wary, extremely cautious behavior, frequently acting as the sentinel of the shoreline. It is often the first shorebird to detect danger and vocalize its loud, mournful, three-noted alarm call ("tlee-oo-ee"), warning other coastal species. While feeding, individuals are territorial and solitary, spacing themselves widely across beaches or flats. However, they gather in dense communal roosts during high tide or overnight. Its flight is fast, direct, and powerful, displaying regular, steady wingbeats that expose the diagnostic black underwing patches.

Nesting: It operates under a strictly monogamous mating system, where males establish and vigorously defend large breeding territories through conspicuous aerial displays. The nest is a shallow, unlined scrape in the dry ground or gravel, sparsely lined with bits of moss, lichens, and dry leaves. A typical clutch consists of 4 eggs (rarely 3) that are olive-buff to sandy-colored, heavily blotched with dark brown to ensure perfect camouflage against the tundra floor. Both parents share incubation duties equally for a period of 26 to 27 days. The chicks are precocial, leaving the nest within hours of hatching to forage for themselves under parental supervision. They fledge and gain independent flight at approximately 35 to 45 days of age.

Conservation status: It is currently classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Although its global population remains large and occupies an immense geographic range, several regional populations are experiencing downward trends. The main threats include the loss and degradation of critical coastal stopover and wintering habitats due to urban development, coastal reclamation, chemical pollution, climate change altering the Arctic nesting tundra, and human disturbances on recreational beaches.
