Its most diagnostic feature is the distinct, dual-toned coloration of its forewings; the basal third is yellowish-gray or pale gray, whereas the outer two-thirds are reddish-bronze, copper, or dark brown with subtle dark bands. The hindwings are translucent, silky gray with a fringed border. The larval stage is cylindrical, reaching about 12 mm in length at maturity, and displays a creamy white, pink, or greenish body coloration contrasted by a highly sclerotized dark brown head capsule.
Geographical distribution: Possesses a highly successful cosmopolitan distribution, inhabiting nearly every continent except Antarctica and extreme polar zones. It is widely established throughout North America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America, where its continuous expansion is heavily facilitated by global commerce, international shipping of agricultural products, and domestic pantry trade.
Habitat: Thrives almost exclusively in synanthropic or human-modified environments. High population densities are commonly documented in grain storage facilities, food processing plants, bakeries, grocery stores, distribution centers, and residential kitchens. While closely tied to indoor settings, it can also adapt to natural wild habitats, exploiting bird nests, rodent burrows, or abandoned beehives where dried organic matter accumulates.
Feeding: Exhibits a strictly polyphagous and detritivorous feeding strategy during its larval phase, standing as one of the most destructive pests of stored food items. Larvae feed voraciously on solid substrates such as cereals, flour, dried fruits, tree nuts, seeds, chocolate, spices, and processed dry pet food. Conversely, adult specimens possess non-functional, vestigial mouthparts; they do not ingest solid food and only occasionally consume water to prevent dehydration.
Behavior: Displays primarily nocturnal and crepuscular activity patterns, actively avoiding bright direct sunlight but frequently showing attraction to dim artificial lights inside buildings. The flight pattern of adults is erratic, low, and characterized by zigzag motions. Larvae exhibit a prominent behavior of spinning extensive silken webbing as they crawl and feed through substrates; this silk accumulates frass and discarded exuviae, ruining the aesthetic and sanitary quality of infested items. Before pupating, mature larvae engage in a wandering phase, crawling upward to locate cracks, crevices, or wall-ceiling junctions to spin their cocoons.
Reproduction: Occurs continuously throughout the year in climate-controlled indoor environments, leading to multiple overlapping generations. Females attract mates by releasing a highly specific sex pheromone and, shortly after copulation, lay between 60 and 400 eggs singly or in small clusters directly on or near suitable larval food sources. Eggs hatch within 2 to 14 days depending on ambient temperatures. Larval development involves 5 to 7 instars and is optimized at temperatures around 30°C (86°F), culminating in a pupation phase that lasts approximately two weeks inside a protective silken cocoon.
Conservation status: Has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List, as it is classified globally as a major economic pest rather than a species of conservation concern. Instead of being protected, wild and domestic populations are actively managed and suppressed using pheromone traps, biological control agents (such as parasitoid wasps), and temperature-based treatments in food storage facilities.
