Description


Is a medium-sized wading bird with a slender, graceful body, easily recognized by its long, thin, downward-curved bill, an adaptation that allows it to probe mud and soft sediments in search of prey. It measures approximately 46–66 cm (18–26 in) in length, with a wingspan of about 90–95 cm (35–37 in). During the breeding season, the plumage becomes especially striking, displaying rich chestnut, bronze, purple, and metallic green iridescent tones that shimmer under changing light conditions. Outside the breeding season, the feathers appear duller, with predominantly brownish coloration and much less pronounced iridescence. The bare facial skin around the base of the bill is grayish to bluish, while the eyes are dark and the legs range from dark gray to blackish. Males and females are very similar in appearance, although males are usually slightly larger and heavier. Juveniles differ noticeably from adults by their mostly brown plumage and finely streaked pale head and neck, lacking the brilliant metallic sheen of mature birds. In flight, it displays a characteristic ibis silhouette, flying with both the neck and legs fully extended.

Geographic Distribution: Occurs throughout a vast portion of the Americas, ranging from southern Canada and much of the United States through Mexico, Central America, and large areas of South America. In South America it is found in Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, Brazil, Uruguay, Chile, and Argentina, where it inhabits a wide variety of wetlands. In Argentina, it is broadly distributed from the northern provinces to Patagonia, although local abundance varies according to the availability of suitable aquatic habitats. Many populations undertake seasonal movements associated with rainfall patterns, fluctuating water levels, and food availability, often gathering in large numbers where wetland conditions are favorable and dispersing when these habitats dry out. In some regions these movements are clearly migratory, while elsewhere they consist primarily of local or regional dispersal.

Habitat: Occupies a broad range of freshwater and slightly brackish wetlands, including marshes, swamps, shallow lakes, ponds, floodplains, wet meadows, rice fields, river margins, reservoirs, and seasonally flooded grasslands. It shows a preference for shallow waters containing abundant emergent aquatic vegetation, where it finds food, shelter, and suitable nesting sites. The species also uses flooded agricultural fields and temporary wetlands created by seasonal rains. The preservation of healthy wetlands is essential for its survival, as every stage of its life cycle depends closely on these environments. During prolonged droughts, individuals may travel considerable distances in search of newly flooded areas capable of supporting abundant food resources.

Diet: Has a highly opportunistic and varied diet, feeding primarily on small aquatic invertebrates. Its prey includes insects and their larvae, beetles, dragonflies, aquatic bugs, crustaceans, mollusks, earthworms, spiders, and numerous other organisms living within mud or aquatic vegetation. It also consumes small fish, amphibians, tadpoles, small reptiles, and occasionally seeds and other plant material. Its distinctive long, curved bill functions as a highly specialized tactile feeding tool, allowing the bird to detect prey hidden beneath soft substrates without relying primarily on vision. While foraging, it slowly walks through shallow water, repeatedly inserting its bill into the mud and sensing the movements of concealed prey with remarkable sensitivity.

Behavior: Is a highly social and gregarious species, particularly outside the breeding season. It is commonly observed in small groups or in large flocks numbering hundreds or even thousands of individuals, often associating with herons, spoonbills, storks, and other ibis species. During long-distance flights, flocks frequently adopt linear formations or characteristic "V" shapes that improve aerodynamic efficiency and reduce energy expenditure. Most activity occurs during daylight hours, with birds spending much of the day feeding before gathering at communal roosts in trees, reed beds, or protected islands as evening approaches. Although generally quiet while foraging, breeding colonies become considerably noisier, with individuals producing a variety of low grunts, croaks, and guttural calls used in courtship, territorial defense, and communication among mates and neighboring birds.

Breeding: Breeding generally occurs during spring and summer, although its timing varies according to rainfall patterns and water availability. The species nests in large breeding colonies, frequently alongside herons, spoonbills, cormorants, storks, and other colonial waterbirds. Nests are constructed from sticks, reeds, and marsh vegetation, usually placed in shrubs, low trees, dense reed beds, or emergent vegetation standing above shallow water, reducing access for terrestrial predators. The clutch typically consists of three to five bluish-green eggs. Both parents share incubation duties for approximately three weeks and cooperate in feeding and protecting the chicks after hatching. Young birds remain in the nest for several weeks before fledging and continue to rely on parental care while strengthening their flight abilities and gradually learning to forage independently.

Conservation Status: The species is currently classified globally as Least Concern (LC) because of its extensive distribution, large population, and overall stable conservation outlook. Nevertheless, several local populations face increasing threats resulting from wetland drainage, habitat conversion for agriculture and urban expansion, water pollution caused by pesticides and other contaminants, changes in natural hydrological cycles, and disturbance at breeding colonies. The long-term conservation of this ibis depends heavily on the protection, restoration, and sustainable management of natural wetlands, together with the preservation of important breeding sites. In addition to its conservation value, the species plays an important ecological role within wetland ecosystems by helping regulate populations of aquatic invertebrates and small vertebrates while contributing to the overall balance and functioning of these highly productive habitats.
