Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Endangered

Description

Belonging to the family Cracidae, this large and imposing galliform stands out due to its slender silhouette and elegant structural build. This impressive bird features a body length ranging from 64 to 74 centimeters. Its plumage is predominantly a glossy black with metallic blue or green reflections, which contrasts sharply with a highly conspicuous, large white wing patch dotted with small dark spots. Atop its head, it sports a prominent, disheveled crest of white feathers with black bases. The featherless facial skin reveals a delicate, pale blue or whitish coloration surrounding the eyes. The bill is light blue at the base with a black tip, complemented by a striking, bright red dewlap showing dark blue hues at its point of attachment, serving as one of the most reliable diagnostic features for visual identification in the field.

Geographical distribution: The geographical range of this species is strictly endemic to the Atlantic Forest biome of eastern South America. Historically, its populations occupied a continuous belt from the southern region of the state of Bahia in Brazil, extending through Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul. Its historical territory also encompasses the far northeastern corner of Argentina, specifically within the Misiones province, and the eastern moist forests of Paraguay. Today, due to severe habitat fragmentation, its distribution is highly localized, restricted to isolated forest remnants and strictly protected areas that maintain the ecological corridors necessary for its long-term survival.

Habitat: This bird is restricted to primary, humid lowland rainforests and transitional montane forests, occasionally reaching elevations up to 1000 meters above sea level. It exhibits a high ecological dependency on pristine, mature forests with a closed canopy, characterized by exceptional plant diversity and proximity to clean, undisturbed watercourses. Its ecological niche is deeply linked to the abundance of native palms, particularly those regions dominated by the juçara palm (Euterpe edulis), whose canopy structure and rich food resources determine the overall habitat quality required for establishing viable populations.

Feeding: Its diet is predominantly frugivorous, playing an essential ecological role as an effective seed disperser for the regeneration of the Atlantic Forest canopy. It displays a strong trophic specialization toward the nutrient-rich fruits of the juçara palm (Euterpe edulis), with its seasonal movements heavily influenced by the fruiting cycle of this plant species. Additionally, it supplements its diet with a wide variety of berries and fruits from the families Lauraceae, Myrtaceae, and Moraceae, alongside flowers, fresh leaves, and occasionally small invertebrates and insects gleaned from tree branches or, on rare occasions, from the forest floor.

Behavior: This species is predominantly arboreal, spending the vast majority of its time in the middle and upper strata of the forest canopy, where it leaps gracefully from branch to branch. Its social structure typically consists of breeding pairs or small family groups of up to six individuals, although it is increasingly observed alone due to severely depleted population densities. During the breeding season, males perform a spectacular instrumental wing-whirring flight, diving from the canopy and generating a loud, mechanical rattling sound with their flight feathers, which serves as a powerful territorial advertisement and courtship signal.

Nesting: The breeding cycle coincides with the austral spring, spanning from September to February. The nest is a rustic, well-hidden platform constructed of dry twigs, vines, and green leaves, typically placed in the fork of a tall tree at heights ranging between 4 and 15 meters above the ground. The clutch consists of 2 to 3 large, white eggs with a rough shell texture. Incubation is carried out solely by the female for approximately 28 days, while the male guards the surrounding territory from potential predators. The hatchlings possess highly cryptic down and are semi-precocial, developing the ability to climb branches and perform short flutter-flights only a few days after hatching.

Conservation status: It is currently classified as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List. This drastic demographic decline is driven primarily by the extensive loss, degradation, and fragmentation of the Atlantic Forest, exacerbated by the overexploitation of the juçara palm, which has severely depleted its primary food source. Additionally, ongoing illegal hunting pressure poses a critical threat due to the bird’s large size and highly prized meat. Active conservation strategies, including habitat restoration, strict enforcement against poaching, and targeted captive breeding and reintroduction programs, are underway to save the species from extinction.
