Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Synonyms: Cactornis inornatus.

Endemic to Coco Island, Costa Rica, being the only species of Darwin´s finches that does not inhabit the Galápagos Islands. The adult male is completely black, while females and juveniles have a design similar to the females of the other Darwin´s finches, though more ochraceous-brownish than grayish. It has a distinctive beak, as it is long, thin, and curved, with little resemblance to other Darwin´s finches. Although it is a terrestrial species, it can be found in all habitats present on the island. Monotypic.

Geographic Distribution: Coco Island, Costa Rica (BirdLife International, 2023).

Description extracted from: La Grotteria (2023).
