Description


It is a medium-to-large cuckoo distinguished by its striking rufous or chestnut plumage, long tail, and slender build. The head and neck are generally grayish, contrasting with the warmer tones of the body. Its bright red eyes, surrounded by dark bare skin, are among its most distinctive features. The long tail often shows metallic greenish or bluish reflections under favorable light conditions. Juveniles tend to display duller coloration and less pronounced contrasts than adults. Its graceful appearance and agile movements allow it to navigate dense vegetation with remarkable ease.

Geographic Distribution: This species occurs widely from southern Mexico through Central America and much of South America, reaching northern Argentina and Uruguay. Within its range, it occupies a variety of wooded habitats and is often considered a common resident where suitable vegetation is available. Its adaptability has enabled it to persist across extensive regions, although local abundance may vary according to habitat quality and landscape conditions.

Habitat: It inhabits tropical and subtropical forests, woodlands, gallery forests, wooded savannas, secondary growth, and forest edges. The species is also capable of using human-modified environments, including rural landscapes, plantations, and suburban areas with sufficient tree cover. Most of its activity takes place in the middle and upper levels of the vegetation, where it finds shelter and foraging opportunities.

Diet: Its diet is primarily carnivorous and consists largely of invertebrates. It feeds on caterpillars, grasshoppers, crickets, spiders, beetles, and numerous other arthropods. It may also consume small vertebrates such as lizards, frogs, and occasionally nestling birds. One of its most notable feeding adaptations is its ability to prey upon hairy caterpillars with irritating hairs, a food resource avoided by many other bird species. It carefully searches branches and foliage, moving methodically while inspecting vegetation for potential prey.

Behavior: The species is usually observed alone or in pairs. Although often concealed among dense foliage, it is frequently detected by its deep, resonant, and repetitive calls that carry over long distances. It moves skillfully through trees by hopping from branch to branch and seldom descends to the ground. Its behavior is generally cautious and unobtrusive, with long periods of stillness interrupted by rapid movements when pursuing prey. Through its feeding habits, it contributes significantly to the natural regulation of insect populations.

Nesting: Breeding generally takes place during the warmer months, although timing varies across its broad geographic range. The nest consists of a shallow platform made of twigs and plant material, usually placed in dense shrubs or trees. Clutches commonly contain two to three pale-colored eggs. Both members of the pair participate in parental duties, including incubation and care of the young. Nestlings remain dependent on their parents for several weeks before becoming fully independent.

Conservation Status: Globally, the species is classified as Least Concern due to its extensive distribution and relatively stable population trend. Nevertheless, local populations may be affected by habitat loss and forest fragmentation, particularly in areas undergoing rapid land-use change. The protection of native forests and the maintenance of ecological corridors are important measures for ensuring the long-term conservation of this species.
