Adults of Phystis simois typically possess a wingspan measuring between 32 and 38 millimeters. The dorsal surface of the wings features a deep dark brown to black ground color, heavily adorned with a series of transverse bands and spots in shades of bright orange, yellow, and cream, forming a characteristic checkered design. Conversely, the ventral side is significantly paler and highly cryptic, exhibiting a complex mosaic of light brown, grayish-brown, and pearly-white patches, which provides remarkable camouflage when the insect rests vertically with its wings folded. The antennae are slender, featuring distinct, pale-tipped apical clubs.
Geographical distribution: This species is widely distributed across the temperate and tropical regions of South America. Its geographic range spans extensively through central and southern Brazil, particularly within the Atlantic Forest and Cerrado biomes. Furthermore, its populations extend southwards into northern and central Argentina, throughout Paraguay, and across several departments of Uruguay, utilizing major river basins as crucial ecological corridors for genetic dispersal.
Habitat: It primarily inhabits transitional zones and open or semi-open ecosystems. The species is frequently observed along humid forest edges, secondary forest clearings, scrublands, grasslands, shrubby savannas, and disturbed environments such as urban gardens, old fields, and rural roadsides. It displays high ecological plasticity, thriving in human-modified landscapes provided its larval host plants and adequate microhabitats are present.
Feeding: As a caterpillar, this insect is a specialist herbivore that feeds on the foliage of plants in the family Acanthaceae, with a strong preference for the genera Justicia, Ruellia, and Dicliptera. Adult butterflies sustain themselves by consuming the nectar of wildflowers, showing a preference for families such as Asteraceae and Verbenaceae. Additionally, males are commonly seen gathering on damp soil, mud, or wet sand along riverbanks to extract water, mineral salts, and sodium, an essential physiological behavior known as mud-puddling.
Behavior: It exhibits strictly diurnal activity, with peak flight times occurring during warm, sunny hours. Its flight is characterized as low, erratic, and fluttering, usually remaining within one meter of the ground or grassy vegetation. Males exhibit prominent territorial behavior, establishing perches on sunlit leaves to patrol their territories, chase off rivals, and intercept passing females. To regulate body temperature, they frequently bask with their wings spread wide to absorb solar radiation.
Reproduction: The life cycle begins after mating, when the female searches for suitable host plants belonging to the family Acanthaceae to lay her eggs. She deposits small clusters of pale yellow or greenish eggs on the underside of young leaves, protecting them from desiccation and predators. Upon hatching, the larvae go through several instars; early-instar caterpillars are gregarious, feeding together under loose silk webs, whereas older caterpillars become solitary. The mature larvae are dark-colored with branched spines or scoli along their bodies. Pupation occurs within a pendant chrysalis attached upside down to a twig or stem by a cremaster, resembling a dry leaf to avoid predation.
Conservation status: Currently, this taxon has not been globally evaluated by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and therefore lacks an official classification on the Red List. However, at regional levels, it is generally considered of Least Concern due to its expansive range, tolerance to human-modified habitats, and the abundance of its larval host plants. Local populations face localized threats from pesticide runoff and habitat fragmentation due to urban and agricultural expansion.
