Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Near Threatened

Description

This is a large and striking wading bird that typically stands between 110 and 130 centimeters tall, with a body mass ranging from 2.5 to 3.5 kilograms. Its plumage is predominantly a delicate pale pink, offset by vibrant crimson-red wing coverts and contrasting black primary and secondary flight feathers, which are highly visible during flight. One of the most distinctive physical traits is found on its legs: the long tarsi are a pale bluish-grey, while the ankle joints (commonly referred to as knees) and webbed feet are a contrasting, intense bright pink or red. The specialized bill is heavy and sharply bent downward, with a pinkish-white base and the distal half colored solid black. The irises of its eyes are a pale yellow.

Geographical distribution: It is native to the southern half of South America. Its core breeding range extends from central Peru and the high-altitude altiplano of Bolivia, down through Chile and Argentina to Tierra del Fuego. During the non-breeding season, populations exhibit nomadic or seasonal movements, dispersing eastward and northward to coastal areas and wetlands in Uruguay, Paraguay, and southern Brazil (specifically Rio Grande do Sul state).

Habitat: It primarily populates shallow, saline, and alkaline lagoons, salt flats, and coastal estuaries, though it occasionally utilizes freshwater bodies. It is well-adapted to high-altitude Andean lakes up to 4,500 meters above sea level, as well as sea-level marine environments, tidal mudflats, and coastal marshes. This versatility allows it to exploit a wide range of aquatic landscapes as long as the water is shallow enough for wading.

Feeding: It is a specialized filter feeder, consuming a diet rich in microscopic organisms. Its food consists of diatoms, blue-green algae, small aquatic invertebrates like brine shrimp (Artemia salina), copepods, midge larvae, and tiny mollusks. To feed, the bird submerges its head upside down, using its muscular tongue as a pump to draw water and sediment into the bill, where fine, comb-like keratin structures called lamellae filter out food particles while expelling excess mud and water.

Behavior: It exhibits highly gregarious behavior, living in cohesive flocks that can number in the thousands. Social communication is reinforced through elaborate, synchronized courtship displays known as "marching", where birds walk in tight groups, pivot in unison, flag their heads from side to side, and flash their contrasting wing colors. It is a facultative migrant, undertaking extensive flights in response to regional environmental changes, drought, or winter freezes in highland lakes.

Nesting: It breeds in massive, highly synchronized colonies located on remote islands or mudbanks of shallow lagoons and salt pans. Both sexes cooperate to build a pillar-shaped nest made of mud compacted with their bills, measuring 30 to 40 centimeters high to protect the clutch from fluctuating water levels. The female lays a single chalky-white egg, which is incubated by both parents for 27 to 31 days. The semi-precocial chick is born with greyish-white down and is fed a nutrient-rich, pinkish substance known as crop milk produced by the parents´ upper digestive tract.

Conservation status: It is currently classified as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List. The most pressing threats to its populations include habitat degradation caused by water extraction for lithium mining in the altiplano salt flats, disturbance from unregulated eco-tourism, illegal egg harvesting, and the long-term impacts of climate change on fragile Andean wetlands.
