Description


Characterized by its delicate build and status as the smallest of the high-altitude Andean filter-feeders, this avian species displays a highly specialized morphology adapted to endure severe environmental stress. It typically reaches a height of 90 to 92 centimeters and maintains an average body weight of around 2 kilograms. The plumage is predominantly a pale pinkish-white, highlighted by vibrant streaks of carmine red across the lower neck, upper breast, and mantle. A distinctive patch of bright red bare skin is visible around the eyes on the lores. Its short, highly curved bill features a vibrant yellow coloration on the basal half, contrasting sharply with a solid black terminal tip. The legs are colored in a diagnostic brick-red hue and lack a hind toe or hallux entirely, a specialized physiological trait shared with other members of the Phoenicoparrus genus to facilitate locomotion over deep, soft mudflats.

Geographical distribution: This high-altitude specialist is restricted to the plateau regions of the central Andes in South America, a geographic area known as the Altiplano or Puna. Its primary distribution range encompasses the southern territory of Peru, the highland wetlands of Bolivia, northern Chile, and northwestern Argentina. While some populations descend to lower altitudes during the harsh winter months, the species returns consistently to specific high-altitude hypersaline lakes for breeding, such as Salar de Tara in Chile, Laguna Colorada in Bolivia, and Laguna de Pozuelos in Argentina.

Habitat: This bird occurs almost exclusively in shallow, hypersaline high-altitude lakes and wetlands located between 3,500 and 4,800 meters above sea level. These aquatic environments are characterized by highly alkaline waters, low depths, and deep layers of fine, organic-rich sediment. The local climate is extremely hostile, exhibiting intense daytime solar radiation coupled with freezing nighttime temperatures that drop well below 0 degrees Celsius, frequently causing large portions of the shallow lakes to freeze over during the night.

Feeding: The species exhibits an extremely specialized trophic ecology, acting as a microphagous primary consumer. It utilizes its uniquely structured bill, which contains thousands of microscopic, comb-like lamellae, to filter tiny food particles from water and surface sediment. Its diet consists almost exclusively of benthic diatoms and microalgae, showing a strong evolutionary specialization toward the genus Navicula. Feeding is performed with the head completely submerged and inverted, utilizing lateral sweeping motions to draw fluid mud through the filtration apparatus while expelling inorganic debris.

Behavior: This highly gregarious species organizes into massive flocks numbering in the thousands, which serves as a vital survival strategy for collective thermoregulation and predator avoidance in open, barren landscapes. It is a nomadic taxon, migrating opportunistically between different high-altitude lakes in response to fluctuating water levels and food availability. The vocal repertoire consists of high-pitched, rhythmic honking sounds that maintain flock cohesion. During the pre-breeding season, they perform elaborate, highly synchronized group courtship displays, where hundreds of individuals march together in tight formations, performing rhythmic head-turning and wing-flashing maneuvers.

Nesting: Breeding occurs in dense, highly concentrated colonies during the high-Andean wet season, typically spanning from November to February. Breeding pairs cooperate closely to construct a truncated cone nest made of mud and wet clay, built to a height of 25 to 30 centimeters to protect the clutch from sudden rises in water levels. The female lays a single chalky-white egg. Incubation duties are shared equally by both parents and last for approximately 26 to 30 days. Upon hatching, the semi-precocial chicks, covered in greyish down, quickly join collective crèches or "nurseries", which allows parents to travel long distances to forage while a few adults guard the young.

Conservation status: The species is currently listed as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The primary threats facing its wild populations include habitat degradation caused by intensive water extraction for lithium and copper mining operations, coupled with the unpredictable effects of global climate change on high-altitude hydrology. Human disturbance at key nesting sites and historic egg harvesting have also contributed to historical population fluctuations, making the systematic protection of its restricted nesting sites across the Altiplano crucial for its long-term survival.
