Its body is robust and streamlined, perfectly suited for efficient swimming, with limbs modified into flippers and a thick layer of blubber that provides thermal insulation while serving as an important energy reserve. The head is rounded, featuring a short, broad muzzle, large dark eyes, and prominent whiskers, or vibrissae, that are highly sensitive to water movements generated by prey, allowing successful hunting even in murky conditions. The fur is short and dense, displaying considerable variation in coloration, ranging from light gray or silvery to dark brown or nearly black, typically covered with irregular dark or pale spots that create a distinctive mottled appearance. Males are generally slightly larger than females, although both sexes share a similar overall appearance. On land, it moves with slow, undulating motions, while in the water it becomes an agile and powerful swimmer capable of remarkable maneuverability through the coordinated use of both its fore and hind flippers.
Geographic Distribution: It is widely distributed throughout the North Atlantic Ocean and the North Pacific Ocean, occupying one of the broadest geographic ranges of any pinniped. It generally favors shallow coastal waters, although individuals may travel farther offshore while foraging. The availability of secure haul-out sites used for resting, molting, and breeding is one of the most important factors determining its local distribution. During low tide, groups are frequently observed hauled out together on sandbars or rocky outcrops, where they remain alert to potential disturbances before returning to the water. These coastal habitats also provide easy access to productive feeding grounds that support a wide variety of prey species.
Diet: It is an opportunistic predator whose diet varies according to geographic location, season, and prey availability. It feeds primarily on fish, including herring, cod, hake, capelin, sand lance, and salmon, while also consuming cephalopods such as squid and octopus, as well as various crustaceans whenever they are abundant. Its exceptionally sensitive vibrissae enable it to detect the water disturbances left behind by swimming prey, allowing successful hunting even under poor visibility. Most hunting is carried out individually, with repeated dives lasting several minutes as the seal searches different depths for suitable prey. Its flexible feeding habits allow it to exploit a wide range of marine resources, making it an important predator within coastal ecosystems and contributing to the natural balance of marine food webs.
Behavior: It is a primarily solitary species or one that forms small groups, although large aggregations may develop at favorable haul-out sites used for resting, molting, or reproduction. Daily activities generally consist of alternating periods of foraging, resting, grooming, and social interactions. It is an excellent swimmer capable of making repeated dives to capture prey, remaining underwater for several minutes before surfacing to breathe. Although it usually avoids close contact with humans, it is naturally curious and may occasionally observe boats or swimmers from a safe distance. Communication includes vocalizations, body postures, and chemical cues, particularly during the breeding season. Juveniles tend to be more exploratory than adults and gradually refine their hunting techniques through independent practice as they mature.
Reproduction: Reproduction shows seasonal variation across different parts of its range. Following a period of delayed implantation, the active gestation lasts approximately eight months, ensuring that births coincide with periods of greater food availability. Females generally give birth to a single pup, which is born with a coat already suitable for entering the water only a few hours after birth, unlike the young of several other seal species that retain a woolly white natal coat for an extended period. Nursing usually lasts three to four weeks, during which the mother´s milk, exceptionally rich in fat, allows the pup to gain weight rapidly. Shortly after weaning, young seals begin catching small prey independently while progressively improving their diving ability and hunting skills. Sexual maturity is generally reached between three and six years of age, depending on sex and environmental conditions.
Conservation Status: It is currently classified as Least Concern due to its extensive distribution, large global population, and the overall stability of many regional populations. Nevertheless, several local threats remain significant, including marine pollution, accidental entanglement in fishing gear, degradation of coastal habitats, increasing maritime traffic, outbreaks of infectious diseases, and the long-term impacts of climate change, which may alter prey availability and modify the structure of coastal ecosystems. In many countries, monitoring and conservation programs have been established to protect breeding colonies and essential haul-out sites.
