Description


Features a robust and elongated profile typical of the Furnariidae family, measuring between 7.5 to 8.3 inches (19 to 21 centimeters) in total length and weighing approximately 35 to 47 grams. The plumage on its upperparts is predominantly rufous-brown, highlighted by a striking bright rufous crown and a warm cinnamon-toned forehead. In contrast, the underparts are mostly creamy-white on the throat and chest, gradually transitioning into a deeper cinnamon-buff coloration along the flanks and undertail coverts. Its eyes are particularly expressive, characterized by a vivid yellow to orange iris, while the bill is strong, slightly decurved, and greyish with a paler base on the lower mandible. The legs are sturdy, olive-grey, and perfectly adapted for ground-dwelling activities.

Geographical distribution: Occurs widely across the central and south-central regions of South America. It is commonly found throughout much of Brazil (particularly within the Cerrado and Pantanal biomes), eastern Bolivia, the entirety of Paraguay, and northern Argentina, extending south to provinces like Formosa, Chaco, Corrientes, Santa Fe, and Entre Ríos, with marginal populations reaching northwestern Uruguay.

Habitat: Inhabits humid savannas, shrubby grasslands, gallery forest edges, wooded wetlands, and the semi-arid scrublands of the Gran Chaco. It shows a strong adaptation to semi-open landscapes, agricultural fields with scattered trees, and rural areas, typically preferring locations in close proximity to permanent or temporary bodies of water.

Feeding: Its diet is predominantly insectivorous, consisting of a wide variety of terrestrial and foliage-dwelling invertebrates. It regularly consumes beetles, ants, grasshoppers, caterpillars, spiders, and bugs. Foraging occurs mainly on the ground, where it actively tosses leaf litter and digs into soft soil, but it also gleans prey from low-hanging branches, bark crevices, and dry leaves.

Behavior: This species is highly conspicuous and vocal, typically observed in pairs or small family groups. Its vocalizations are loud and complex, characterized by rapid, descending coordinated duets performed from high, exposed perches to signal territorial ownership. It is active during the day, combining short, direct flights with confident walking on the ground.

Nesting: Constructs massive, multi-chambered retort-shaped structures made of thorny twigs and branches, which represent a true architectural marvel. These bulky nests can measure over three feet (one meter) in length and are suspended from the outer branches of isolated trees or utility poles. Although the structure may contain several internal chambers, only one is lined with soft material for breeding, where the female lays 3 to 4 white eggs. These nests are frequently parasitized by the Shiny Cowbird (Molothrus bonariensis) or reused by other bird species once abandoned.

Conservation status: Is currently evaluated as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The global population is considered stable, as the species tolerates habitat fragmentation extremely well and successfully colonizes rural environments altered by agricultural development.
