Belonging to the group of massive marine birds, this species stands out due to its impressive wingspan and unmistakable silhouette, reaching a body length of 3.6 to 4.9 feet and a wingspan exceeding 7.5 feet. It exhibits a predominantly dark brown plumage on its back and underparts, which contrasts sharply with a distinctive white stripe running down the sides of the neck to the hindneck. During the breeding season, the crown of the head turns a pale yellow, and the nape displays a dark chestnut-brown tuft. Its most striking feature is the massive bill, measuring between 13.4 and 16.1 inches, equipped with an elastic gular pouch that turns intense shades of blue, cobalt, and violet during courtship, while the tip of the bill turns a bright orange or red. Juveniles of Pelecanus thagus are notably more uniform in appearance, showing a greyish-brown plumage and whitish belly, lacking the colorful facial and bill ornaments of mature individuals.
Geographical distribution: This marine bird is restricted to the Pacific coast of South America, closely associated with the cold, nutrient-rich waters of the Humboldt Current. Its primary range extends from northern Peru to southern Chile, regularly reaching Chiloé Island and occasionally wandering further south. Accidental or sporadic sightings have been documented in southwestern Ecuador and along the Atlantic coast of southern Argentina, movements that are typically triggered by severe oceanographic anomalies or localized food shortages in its core distribution zone.
Habitat: It primarily inhabits cold and temperate coastal marine ecosystems. It is commonly found in sheltered bays, sandy beaches, rocky cliffs, and most importantly, on guano islands that offer protection against terrestrial predators. It rarely ventures inland, limiting its presence to coastal river estuaries and saline lagoons close to the ocean. Rocky ledges, breakwaters, and harbor piers are frequently utilized as roosting sites to rest and dry its plumage.
Feeding: The diet is strictly piscivorous, showing an extreme ecological dependence on the Peruvian anchoveta (Engraulis ringens), although it also consumes other small epipelagic fish such as silversides, sardines, and occasionally small marine invertebrates. To capture its prey, it performs spectacular plunge-dives from heights of 30 to 50 feet, crashing into the water to scoop up schools of fish with its large gular pouch, which acts as a dragnet. After surfacing, it tilts its bill downward to drain the water before swallowing the catch whole, frequently defending its food from kleptoparasitic gulls.
Behavior: It is a highly gregarious species that travels and forages in organized flocks, often flying in coordinated "V" formations or long, single-file lines just inches above the water´s surface, utilizing ground effect to conserve energy. While it is an elegant and effortless glider in the air, it is clumsy on land due to its short, totipalmate legs. Adults are generally silent away from nesting colonies, where they express harsh grunts, hisses, and low guttural vocalizations during territorial disputes and courtship displays, which involve rhythmic head-up movements and pouch-stretching.
Nesting: Breeding occurs in dense colonies, gathering thousands of breeding pairs on remote rocky headlands and desert guano islands. The nest is a shallow scrape on the sandy or gravelly ground, bordered by an accumulation of guano, feathers, dry kelp, and debris. Females typically lay two to three chalky white eggs, which are incubated by both parents using their webbed feet to transfer warmth over a period of 32 to 35 days. The chicks hatch naked and helpless, relying entirely on semi-digested fish regurgitated by the parents directly into their bills, and they fledge at approximately three months of age.
Conservation status: It is currently classified as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List. Population levels are highly susceptible to the periodic disruptions caused by the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), which warms sea temperatures, driving anchoveta schools into deeper or colder waters, leading to widespread nesting failures and high adult mortality. Additional significant threats include commercial overfishing of its primary prey, human disturbance at nesting sites, unsustainable guano harvesting, and recent outbreaks of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI).
