Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

It is one of the largest and most conspicuous wild pigeons in central and eastern South America. It has a robust body, a relatively small head, and a long tail. The plumage is predominantly grayish and violet-toned, with a distinctive scaled pattern on the neck and upper breast created by pale-edged feathers that form a striking reticulated appearance. The eyes are reddish, while the legs range from pinkish to reddish tones. In flight, its broad and powerful wings often produce an audible sound during takeoff. Males and females are similar in appearance, whereas juveniles generally display duller colors and a less pronounced scaled pattern. The elegant posture and considerable size of Patagioenas picazuro make it readily recognizable throughout much of its range.

Geographic Distribution: This species is widely distributed across eastern and central South America. Its range includes Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay, as well as adjacent border regions in neighboring countries. In Argentina, it occupies a broad variety of provinces extending from the north to the central part of the country and has expanded noticeably in many areas over recent decades. This expansion has been associated with agricultural development and the species’ remarkable ability to adapt to human-modified landscapes. Depending on the region, some populations remain resident year-round, while others may undertake seasonal movements or local dispersal in response to food availability.

Habitat: It inhabits a wide variety of environments, including open woodlands, gallery forests, shrublands, wooded savannas, rural areas, agricultural landscapes, urban parks, and suburban tree-lined zones. Dense, continuous forests are generally avoided, while habitats containing scattered trees, forest edges, and open areas are often preferred. The availability of resting sites, nesting locations, and nearby food resources is important for maintaining local populations. Its high ecological flexibility allows it to thrive in both natural and heavily altered environments.

Diet: The species is primarily granivorous and frugivorous. It feeds on seeds from numerous native and cultivated plants, as well as fruits, buds, and other plant materials that become available throughout the year. Agricultural crops are frequently utilized, particularly where grains are accessible after harvest or during specific stages of cultivation. Most feeding takes place on the ground, where individuals walk slowly while selecting suitable food items. Like other pigeons, it temporarily stores food in the crop before digestion continues.

Behavior: Individuals may be observed alone, in pairs, or in groups of varying size. During certain seasons, large flocks may gather in areas where food resources are abundant. Its flight is strong, direct, and sustained, enabling movements between feeding and roosting sites over considerable distances. The species is generally vigilant and often seeks refuge in tall trees when disturbed. Its vocalizations consist of deep, repetitive cooing calls that can be heard from a considerable distance and are among the characteristic sounds of many South American rural landscapes.

Nesting: Breeding usually occurs during periods of greater food availability, although timing varies among regions. The nest consists of a simple platform made of twigs placed in trees, large shrubs, or other elevated vegetation. The clutch typically contains one or two white eggs. Both members of the pair participate in incubation and chick care. As in other pigeons, the young are initially fed with a nutritious substance known as crop milk, produced within the digestive tract of the adults. Juveniles remain in the nest until they are sufficiently developed to perform their first flights.

Conservation Status: At the global level, it is classified as Least Concern (LC) due to its extensive geographic range, large population size, and apparently stable demographic trends. Although local populations may be affected by habitat alteration, hunting, or certain agricultural practices, the species is not currently facing threats severe enough to jeopardize its overall survival. Its adaptability to human-modified environments has played an important role in maintaining abundant populations across much of South America.
