Description

Large pigeon measuring approximately 36 cm in length, with a robust appearance and conspicuous yellow bill and legs. It shows an overall brownish-gray to slate-gray coloration, with more noticeable purplish tones on the crown, breast, and upper belly. Its most distinctive feature is a white band on the nape that contrasts with the hindneck, where it displays striking bronze-green iridescent scaling. The back is uniformly brownish-gray, and the tail shows a broad paler terminal band that is especially visible in flight. The iris is reddish, surrounded by a thin red orbital ring; the bill is entirely yellow, and the legs are also yellow. The sexes are similar, although the female usually shows slightly duller tones and less iridescence on the neck. Juveniles lack the characteristic white collar and display a more uniform and subdued coloration.

Geographic Distribution: With six subspecies, it is distributed from western North America to northwestern Argentina, occupying primarily mountainous regions of Central America and the Andes. In Argentina, the subspecies albilinea inhabits the Yungas of Jujuy, Salta, Tucumán, and Catamarca, where it is mainly associated with montane forests of alder (Alnus acuminata) and mountain podocarp (Podocarpus parlatorei), also reaching the ecotone with Polylepis woodlands. It is recorded between approximately 1,000 and 2,500 m above sea level and may perform seasonal altitudinal movements.

Habitat: At the southernmost limit of its distribution and in Argentina, it is a characteristic species of the montane forests of the Yungas. It occurs particularly in alder forests, mountain podocarp forests, and transitional areas toward Polylepis woodlands. It primarily uses the upper vegetation strata, moving among the crowns of mature trees, although it also descends to the ground to forage. It generally inhabits humid and cloudy environments where it can be difficult to detect.

Diet: Its diet consists mainly of fruits, seeds, grains, conifer seeds, and inflorescences. It forages both on the ground and in trees, feeding alone or in small to medium-sized flocks. In montane forests, it takes advantage of seasonal food resources available in native trees and shrubs.

Behavior: It is generally observed in small to medium-sized flocks. Despite its large size, it often goes unnoticed by remaining motionless in the canopy or moving silently through the vegetation of montane forests. Under foggy conditions or low cloud cover, it can be particularly difficult to detect. It has also been observed sunning itself on rocks and grassy clearings along the edges of alder forests (personal observation). Its vocalization consists of a slow series of deep, monotonous notes that often reveal its presence before it is seen.

Nesting: It builds a simple platform of twigs where it usually lays a single white egg. Both members of the pair participate in incubation and in caring for the chick.

Conservation Status: Classified as Least Concern (LC) at the international level. In Argentina, it has no national threat category, although it has a restricted distribution within the montane forests of northwestern Argentina and is generally an infrequently observed species. It occurs in several protected areas of the Yungas, where the conservation of montane forests is essential for maintaining its populations.
