Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Belongs to the Columbidae family and stands out as one of the largest wild pigeons within its geographical range, measuring approximately 13 to 15 inches (33 to 38 centimeters) in total length. The general plumage is characterized by a deep, rich vinous-purplish chest and head, transitioning to a duller slate-grey tone on the lower back, rump, and wing coverts. Its most diagnostic field mark is a prominent white narrow band on the nape of the neck, bordered below by a patch of highly iridescent, metallic bronze-green feathers that shimmer under direct sunlight. The bill is solid black and slightly decurved, while the eyes feature a striking double ring of outer yellow and inner red, surrounded by bare pink orbital skin. The legs and feet are short and colored a vibrant magenta or carmine red.

Geographical distribution: Is endemic to the temperate forests of southern South America. Its native range extends along the western slopes of the Andes in Chile, from the Atacama region in the north down to the Aisén and Magallanes regions in the south. On the eastern side of the Andes, its presence is documented in southwestern Argentina, specifically in the provinces of Neuquén, Río Negro, Chubut, and northwestern Santa Cruz. The species displays seasonal altitudinal migrations, moving to lower valleys during cold winter periods.

Habitat: Primarily inhabits temperate rainforests, showing a strong ecological association with mature native forests dominated by Nothofagus species (such as coihue, lenga, and roble) and high-altitude coniferous forests containing the ancient monkey puzzle tree (Araucaria araucana). It can also be found in forest edges, clearings, dense thickets of native bamboos of the genus Chusquea, and rural agricultural lands adjacent to native woodland remnants.

Feeding: Exhibits a strictly frugivorous and granivorous diet, relying heavily on seasonal forest resources. During autumn and winter, it feeds extensively on the highly nutritious seeds or pine nuts of the Araucaria araucana, which it swallows whole. Its diet is supplemented by a wide variety of fleshy fruits from native trees and shrubs, such as maqui (Aristotelia chilensis), boldo (Peumus boldus), and peumo (Cryptocarya alba), making this bird an essential seed disperser for forest regeneration.

Behavior: Displays highly gregarious habits outside the breeding season, forming medium to large flocks that forage together in the canopy or on the ground. Its flight is strong, swift, and direct, typically producing a loud, distinctive clapping sound with its wings when startled into flight. The species communicates through deep, low-pitched, repetitive cooing vocalizations that are characteristic of the Columbidae family.

Nesting: Breeds during the spring and summer months, typically from October to March. The pair constructs a fragile, flat platform nest made of dry twigs and sticks, situated in dense foliage or hidden within thorny bushes and bamboo thickets at heights ranging from 6 to 50 feet above the ground. The female lays a single white egg, which is incubated by both parents for approximately 18 to 20 days. Both parents participate equally in brooding and feeding the chick with crop milk.

Conservation status: Classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Although its populations suffered a catastrophic collapse in the mid-1950s due to an outbreak of Newcastle disease, the species has shown remarkable resilience and recovery. Current conservation concerns are primarily associated with habitat fragmentation, illegal logging, and the frequent occurrence of forest fires in the Andean-Patagonian region.
