It is an exquisite member of the Geometridae family, easily recognized by its spectacular and distinctive wing patterns. The adult moth features a wingspan of approximately 35 to 48 millimeters. The ground color of its wings is a vibrant bright yellow to deep golden-orange, heavily ornamented with a series of rounded dark brown or black spots that frequently contain iridescent, metallic grey or bluish centers under specific lighting conditions. This disruptive pattern mimics a leopard´s coat, facilitating crypsis. Its body mirrors this bright yellow coloration with dark dorsal dots along the abdomen, while the antennae are filiform in females and slightly bipectinate in males, optimized for detecting pheromones across dense forest layers.
Geographical distribution: This species is widely distributed throughout the Neotropical realm. Its geographic range extends from southern Mexico through Central America (with rich populations documented in Costa Rica and Panama) down into South America, where it is widely recorded in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela, and across the humid forested regions of Brazil, particularly within the Amazon basin and the Atlantic Forest biome.
Habitat: It primarily colonizes lowland tropical rainforests, cloud forests, and premontane wet forests. It is typically found at elevations ranging from sea level up to 2200 meters. It thrives in environments characterized by high relative humidity, dense understory vegetation, and undisturbed forest canopies, which provide both shelter and abundant resources for its development.
Feeding: As an adult, it possesses a fully functional proboscis used to feed on floral nectar from various angiosperms, as well as sap flows and mineral-rich moisture from damp earth or decaying organic matter. Conversely, the larval stage is strictly phytophagous, feeding on the leaves of specific host plants. The caterpillars show a strong preference for woody plants, mainly within the families Melastomataceae and Myrtaceae, consuming leaf tissue to sustain their rapid larval growth.
Behavior: It exhibits predominantly nocturnal and crepuscular activity patterns, actively flying during the night to seek mates and forage. During the daylight hours, it remains completely stationary on the undersides of leaves. This resting posture, combined with its spotted pattern, disrupts its silhouette and renders it nearly invisible to visual predators such as birds and spiders. Adults also exhibit strong positive phototaxis, frequently drawn to artificial light traps or lights near forested boundaries.
Reproduction: The life cycle begins after mating, which is mediated by sex pheromones emitted by the female. She deposits small, pale greenish or yellowish eggs in clusters or singly on the undersides of host plant leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae emerge as typical "inchworms" or loopers, utilizing their unique looping locomotion due to the absence of several mid-abdominal prolegs. After passing through several instars and reaching maturity, the caterpillar spins a loose silken cocoon integrated with leaf litter on the forest floor or within a folded leaf to pupate, emerging as a winged adult shortly after.
Conservation status: This moth is currently not evaluated by the IUCN Red List, a common status for many Neotropical micro- and macro-lepidopterans. Although not considered globally threatened, local populations face significant pressure from habitat loss, intensive deforestation for agricultural expansion, and the use of chemical pesticides, which directly impact both their host plants and adult survival rates.
