Description


Features a striking pale green to vibrant grass-green coloration in its adult stage, providing exceptional camouflage against forest foliage. This insect exhibits pronounced sexual dimorphism, with females measuring between 20 and 25 mm in length, while males are significantly smaller, ranging from 15 to 18 mm. The pronotum is semicircular and translucent along the lateral margins, often highlighted by a thin, pale yellowish or white border. Both tegmina and hindwings are fully developed and extend beyond the tip of the abdomen, granting this species impressive aerial maneuverability. In stark contrast, the wingless nymphs display a dark brown to blackish coloration, a morphological adaptation suited for their subterranean, burrowing lifestyle.

Geographical distribution: Is widely distributed throughout the Neotropics, spanning vast regions of Central America and South America. Its documented range includes countries such as Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and parts of Venezuela. It is commonly encountered in low-altitude humid river basins and tropical forest corridors where stable warm temperatures and high humidity persist throughout the year.

Habitat: Primarily inhabits the understory of tropical rainforests and humid subtropical woodlands. This species is closely associated with microhabitats characterized by high relative humidity, such as decaying leaf litter, decomposing logs, and the moist undersides of loose tree bark. Additionally, it has successfully adapted to disturbed agricultural environments, becoming particularly abundant in banana plantations where it finds shelter within the damp leaf sheaths of the plants.

Feeding: Exhibits a detritivorous and phytophagous dietary regime. It actively feeds on decomposing plant matter, fallen leaves, fungal growth, and especially overripe or fermenting wild fruits that fall to the forest floor. Its chewing mouthparts are highly adapted to process cellulose and soft organic tissues, allowing this insect to play an essential ecological role in nutrient cycling and organic decomposition within its native ecosystem.

Behavior: Demonstrates predominantly nocturnal and crepuscular activity patterns to avoid visual predators. During daylight hours, individuals remain concealed in a gregarious manner beneath litter or loose bark. Adults are agile flyers, with males being highly attracted to artificial light sources during the night. Conversely, the wingless nymphs exhibit fossorial behavior, actively burrowing into loose organic soil or decaying wood to maintain hydration and avoid predation.

Reproduction: Utilizes an ovoviviparous reproductive strategy, which represents an advanced evolutionary trait among blattodeans. Following a successful mating event, the female produces an ootheca, which she subsequently retracts into an internal brood pouch inside her abdomen. The embryos develop internally for approximately 30 to 40 days, a duration heavily influenced by ambient temperature. Once development is complete, the female gives birth to active, free-living nymphs that undergo several instars before achieving adulthood and their iconic green pigmentation.

Conservation status: Is currently not evaluated by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), meaning it lacks an official global threat assessment. Nevertheless, it is considered a common and abundant species across its natural range. The primary long-term threat to its populations is habitat fragmentation and widespread deforestation driven by agricultural expansion and urbanization in the Neotropical region.
