Conservation status: Near Threatened

Description

Is a medium-sized cervid distinguished by its slender build and elegant posture. It exhibits a coat color that ranges from reddish-brown to pale tan, contrasting sharply with the pure white patches on the underparts, throat, insides of the ears, and around the eyes. Adult males develop three-tined antlers that are shed and regrown on an annual basis. A highly distinctive diagnostic feature is the strong, garlic-like odor emitted from its interdigital glands, which is particularly conspicuous in adult males. They weigh between 30 and 40 kilograms and stand about 70 to 75 centimeters tall at the shoulder, enabling swift movement across open terrain.

Geographical distribution: Occurs in highly fragmented populations across central and southern South America. Historically, its range spanned vast contiguous grassland biomes, but current populations are restricted to isolated pockets within Brazil (primarily the Cerrado and Pantanal regions), eastern Bolivia, the Chaco region of Paraguay, small relic populations in Uruguay, and highly localized areas in Argentina, specifically in the provinces of San Luis, Corrientes, and Buenos Aires.

Habitat: Inhabits open, flat grasslands, savannas, flooding pampas, and shrubby transition zones. It shows a strong preference for ecosystems devoid of dense woody vegetation, favoring pristine pampas and cerrado formations where native grasses offer both high-quality forage and clear sightlines to spot approaching predators from a distance.

Feeding: Operates as a highly selective herbivore, specifically classified as a concentrate selector. Its diet consists of high-quality vegetation, including broadleaf herbs, young grass shoots, legumes, and tender leaves of low-growing shrubs. It carefully avoids mature, highly fibrous grasses, focusing instead on digestible plant parts rich in protein and moisture.

Behavior: Displays primarily diurnal and crepuscular activity patterns, although it may shift to nocturnal behavior in regions with intense human disturbance. It is a social species that forms loose, fluid groups of two to six individuals that frequently merge and split without strict hierarchical boundaries. Males use specialized preorbital and interdigital glands to mark vegetation and communicate territorial boundaries, leaving behind a persistent scent.

Reproduction: Has a reproductive cycle that can span the entire year, though births show a distinct peak during the spring months. The gestation period lasts approximately seven months (210 to 220 days), resulting in the birth of a single fawn. The newborn is born with a camouflaged coat featuring lines of white spots, which helps it blend seamlessly into the surrounding grassland vegetation while it remains hidden during its first weeks of life.

Conservation status: Is classified as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, but its regional subspecies are highly endangered, with some bordering on extinction. The primary drivers of the decline of Ozotoceros bezoarticus are habitat destruction and fragmentation driven by agricultural expansion, competition with livestock for resources, transmission of diseases from domestic cattle, and illegal hunting.
