This lagomorph exhibits a head-to-body length of 13 to 20 inches (34 to 50 centimeters) and a body weight ranging between 2.6 and 5.5 pounds (1.2 and 2.5 kilograms). Its hind limbs are considerably longer than the forelimbs, specifically adapted for rapid, leaping locomotion. It is distinguished from hares by its shorter ears, measuring approximately 2.4 to 3.1 inches (6 to 8 centimeters), which lack the black tips characteristic of the genus Lepus. Its large eyes are situated laterally on the skull, providing a nearly 360-degree field of vision to detect approaching predators, and its short tail displays a prominent white underside used as a visual alarm signal.
Geographical distribution: Native to the Iberian Peninsula (including Spain and Portugal) and northern Africa. However, through centuries of human translocation, it has successfully established wild populations across all continents except Antarctica. Significant historical introductions occurred in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, South America (particularly in Chile and Argentina), and various regions of North America. In many of these introduced territories, it is classified as a highly destructive invasive species that causes severe ecological imbalances and economic damage to agriculture.
Habitat: Displays high ecological plasticity, preferring temperate regions with dry, well-drained, sandy soils that facilitate the excavation of stable underground burrow systems. It commonly occupies mediterranean shrublands, pastures, agricultural fields, open woodlands, coastal dunes, and even urban parks or suburban green spaces. It generally avoids dense, continuous forests and areas with exposed rocky terrain or high water tables, which prevent the successful construction of underground networks.
Feeding: Operates as an obligate, opportunistic herbivore, consuming a vast array of plant material. Its diet comprises grasses, forbs, leaves, roots, buds, and, during winter or prolonged dry seasons, the bark of young trees and shrubs. It relies on cecotrophy, a specialized digestive adaptation where soft, nutrient-rich feces (cecotropes) produced in the cecum are reingested directly from the anus. This behavioral mechanism allows the animal to reabsorb crucial proteins, amino acids, and B-complex vitamins synthesized by its specialized gut microbiota.
Behavior: Functions primarily as a crepuscular and nocturnal mammal, minimizing exposure to daytime predators. It is a highly social species, living in hierarchical groups that share a complex subterranean network of tunnels called a warren. Territories are actively defended by dominant males using scent marking from chin glands, urine, and fecal piles. When threatened, an individual alerts the colony by thumping its hind feet loudly against the ground before fleeing at high speeds to the safety of the nearest burrow entrance.
Reproduction: Renowned for its extraordinary reproductive capacity, capable of breeding continuously when climatic conditions and food availability are favorable. The peak breeding season usually occurs during spring and summer. Following a gestation period of approximately 30 days, the female gives birth to a litter of 3 to 9 kits. The young are born in a specialized nesting chamber deep within the warren, lined with dry vegetation and soft fur plucked from the mother´s chest. The newborns are strictly altricial, being born blind, deaf, and hairless. Their eyes open at around 10 days, and they are weaned by four weeks of age, achieving sexual maturity between 3 and 4 months.
Conservation status: Classified differently depending on the geographical context. In its native range on the Iberian Peninsula, the species is listed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List due to catastrophic population declines driven by viral outbreaks such as myxomatosis and rabbit hemorrhagic disease (RHD), alongside habitat loss. Conversely, in regions where it has been introduced, it is regarded as a major environmental pest, prompting intensive management and eradication programs to protect fragile native ecosystems.
