Description


This is a medium-sized lepidopteran belonging to the family Nymphalidae, distinguished by the attractive chromatic pattern of its wings. Adults have a wingspan ranging from 35 to 45 millimeters, with subtle sexual dimorphism where females are typically slightly larger and display lighter tones than males. The dorsal surface of the wings features a dark brown to black background, on which striking orange bands are arranged transversely in the discal and postdiscal regions, accompanied by small white spots located near the apex of the forewings. In contrast, the ventral side exhibits a highly cryptic pattern with ochre, grayish, and brown tones that mimic the texture of a dry leaf, providing excellent camouflage against potential predators when the butterfly rests with its wings closed.

Geographical distribution: It is widely distributed throughout the temperate and subtropical regions of the Southern Cone of South America. Its geographic range covers central and southern Brazil (from states such as Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro down to Rio Grande do Sul), the entirety of Paraguay, the territory of Uruguay, and northeastern Argentina, spreading commonly through the provinces of Misiones, Corrientes, Entre Ríos, Santa Fe, and northeastern Buenos Aires, mainly following the basins of the Paraná and Uruguay rivers.

Habitat: It primarily occupies a wide variety of open and semi-open ecosystems, showing great ecological plasticity. It is commonly found along forest edges, gallery forests, clearings within native woodlands, humid savannas, shrubby grasslands, and anthropized areas such as urban gardens, public parks, and abandoned agricultural fields. It prefers environments with good solar exposure that maintain moderate humidity levels, conditions that favor the growth of its host plants.

Feeding: During its caterpillar stage, this insect exhibits a highly specialized phytophagous diet, feeding on plants of the Acanthaceae family, with a marked preference for the genera Ruellia and Justicia. Adults, on the contrary, have a generalist diet based on the absorption of liquids through their proboscis. They actively feed on the nectar of wild flowers, especially from the Asteraceae family, but they also supplement their nutrition through a behavior known as mud-puddling, absorbing mineral salts and moisture directly from damp soil, mud, decaying organic matter, and animal droppings.

Behavior: This diurnal insect exhibits active patterns strictly during daylight hours, being most active during peak solar radiation. It has a low flight, erratic and generally slow-paced, keeping close to the ground, although it is capable of accelerating rapidly if threatened. Males display strong territorial and perching behavior, positioning themselves on sun-exposed leaves at medium height to monitor their territory and detect receptive females. They engage in frequent thermoregulatory basking, resting with their wings fully spread on vegetation or stones to absorb heat before taking flight.

Reproduction: The life cycle begins with mating, after which the female deposits eggs in compact clusters on the underside of the host plants´ leaves to protect them from harsh weather. The eggs are spheroidal, with longitudinal ridges, and have a yellowish color that darkens before hatching. Upon hatching, the larvae are gregarious during their early instars, feeding together and sometimes spinning protective silk threads. Mature caterpillars possess branched spines along their bodies to deter predators. Eventually, they search for a sheltered site to pupate into a chrysalis, which hangs upside down by a cremaster, displaying a highly mimetic brown or grayish coloration.

Conservation status: It has not been formally evaluated globally by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), so it is unofficially considered under the Least Concern (LC) category due to its wide distribution, local abundance, and capacity to adapt to human-modified environments. Nevertheless, local populations can be affected by the accelerated loss of natural habitat, uncontrolled urbanization, and the indiscriminate use of herbicides that eliminate the vital host plants required for the development of their larval stages.
