Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

This medium-sized bird features a slender profile with a total length ranging between 20 and 22 inches (50 to 56 cm) and an average weight of 16 to 21 ounces (450 to 600 g). The general coloration of its plumage is characterized by soft grayish-brown tones, with a prominent ash-gray head and neck that transitions into an olive-brown back and wings. The underparts are paler, displaying a soft buff or pale cinnamon coloration. Its long, broad tail is dark bronze-green, and the outer tail feathers are tipped with a highly conspicuous bright rufous or chestnut-orange band. A key diagnostic feature is the patch of bare, bright red skin on its throat, which becomes highly visible during vocalization, courtship displays, and periods of breeding excitement. The bill is short, decurved, and slate-gray, while the legs are sturdy and pale grayish-pink.

Geographical distribution: It is native to the Gran Chaco region and adjacent lowlands of South America. Its geographic range encompasses northern Argentina, western Paraguay, southeastern Bolivia, and southwestern Brazil, where it is particularly common in the Pantanal wetlands of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul. Currently, two distinct subspecies are recognized: Ortalis canicollis canicollis, which occupies the southern and western portions of the range, and Ortalis canicollis pantanalensis, endemic to the Brazilian Pantanal.

Habitat: It primarily inhabits dry and semi-humid forests, thorny scrublands, gallery forests, and wooded savannas within the Chaco and Pantanal biomes. It exhibits a high degree of ecological tolerance, frequently utilizing disturbed areas, secondary growth forests, and human-modified landscapes near rural communities. It maintains a strong association with freshwater sources, such as riverbanks, temporary lagoons, and marshes, which are vital for its survival during the dry season.

Feeding: It is predominantly herbivorous and highly opportunistic in its feeding habits. Its diet consists mainly of wild fruits, tender leaves, flower buds, shoots, and seeds, which it gathers from both the forest canopy and the ground. It shows a preference for the fruits of native trees like Ziziphus mistol and various cacti species. During the breeding season, it supplements its diet by consuming small invertebrates, including caterpillars, beetles, and grasshoppers, to satisfy the increased nutritional and protein demands of its chicks.

Behavior: It is an exceptionally social and vocal species, typically living in stable flocks of 4 to 30 individuals. Active during the day, it spends its time foraging in the mid-story of trees or walking along the forest floor, leaping between branches with great agility. It is famous for its loud, harsh, and rhythmic group choruses, usually heard at dawn and dusk, which sound like a repetitive "charata" or "chachalaca". These vocalizations are often performed as antiphonal duets between breeding pairs, serving a key role in territorial defense and reinforcing social bonds within the flock.

Nesting: The breeding season takes place during the rainy season, extending from October to February. It constructs a relatively small, shallow, and loosely woven platform nest made of twigs, lianas, and dry leaves, lined with fresh foliage. The nest is typically hidden in dense foliage, vines, or thorny bushes at heights ranging from 5 to 13 feet above the ground. The female lays a clutch of 3 to 4 chalky white eggs with rough shells. Incubation is carried out solely by the female and lasts approximately 22 to 25 days. The chicks are highly precocial; they hatch covered in cryptic down and are capable of climbing and making short flights shortly after hatching, staying close to both parents for protection.

Conservation status: It is classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Although it faces pressure from subsistence hunting and significant habitat loss due to the clearing of the Chaco forest for agricultural expansion and cattle ranching, its population remains stable. Its adaptability to secondary habitats and human-altered environments contributes to its continued survival across its natural range.
