Adults feature an impressive wingspan ranging from 70 to 90 millimeters, with females displaying a slightly more robust body structure and broader wing shape. The dorsal surface of the forewings exhibits a dark, dusky brown coloration, dramatically bisected by a prominent oblique orange-yellow band, while the hindwings feature a matching warm-toned margin. Conversely, the ventral side of the wings presents a highly intricate, bark-like pattern composed of mottled grays, browns, and ochers that perfectly mimics dead foliage or tree trunks. This ventral surface is also adorned with conspicuous eyespots (ocelli) that function as deconstructive markings to startle or misdirect potential predators. The caterpillars are bright green with distinctive longitudinal yellow pinstripes, featuring two long caudal filaments at the posterior end and a head capsule armed with prominent head horns (scoli).
Geographical distribution: This insect is widely distributed across the Neotropical region, stretching from southern Mexico through Central America and deep into South America. It maintains highly stable populations in countries such as Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, as well as across vast territories of Brazil and the northern provinces of Argentina, demonstrating an impressive ecological tolerance across varying lowland elevations.
Habitat: It primarily colonizes humid tropical and subtropical rainforests, gallery forests, and woodland edges. However, due to its highly adaptable nature, it is also frequently recorded in human-modified landscapes, including urban parks, residential gardens, botanical centers, and extensively within agricultural zones such as banana plantations and commercial palm groves, where its primary larval host plants are cultivated.
Feeding: As adults, they are strictly frugivorous and do not visit flowers for nectar. Instead, they obtain vital nutrients and moisture by feeding on fermenting fruits, sap flows oozing from damaged tree bark, damp soil minerals, and decaying organic matter. In contrast, the larval stages are voracious folivores, feeding almost exclusively on monocotyledonous plants, particularly palms of the family Arecaceae (such as Syagrus romanzoffiana and Cocos nucifera) and occasionally wild or cultivated bananas of the family Musaceae.
Behavior: This species displays highly pronounced crepuscular activity, meaning it is most active during the dim light conditions of dawn and dusk. Throughout the bright daylight hours, individuals remain completely motionless, clinging vertically to tree trunks or roosting beneath large palm fronds where their cryptic underside renders them virtually invisible. When disturbed, they initiate a rapid, erratic, and powerful flight pattern, staying relatively close to the forest floor or navigating swiftly through the understory canopy to evade predators like insectivorous birds and bats.
Reproduction: The reproductive cycle begins with intricate mating flights taking place during twilight hours. Once fertilized, the female deposits her pale green or whitish spherical eggs singly or in small clusters on the underside of host plant fronds. Upon hatching, the larvae progress through five distinct instars, feeding heavily to accumulate fat reserves. Pupation occurs directly on the host plant, where the caterpillar transforms into a suspended chrysalis. This pupa is colored in realistic shades of green or light brown, perfectly mimicking a dry, withered leaf hanging upside down, ensuring protection during this vulnerable developmental stage which lasts roughly two weeks.
Conservation status: This species has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and currently does not hold any global threat status. Thanks to the widespread cultivation of ornamental and agricultural palms in urban and rural environments, its populations remain abundant and secure, often being categorized as a minor agricultural nuisance rather than a species of conservation concern.
