Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Characterized as a medium-sized, ground-dwelling bird, this representative of the Odontophoridae family features a robust, plump silhouette, measuring between 26 and 29 centimeters in length, and weighing approximately 350 to 450 grams. Its plumage is masterfully designed for camouflage within the forest understory, presenting predominantly grayish-brown and warm rufous tones. The crown exhibits a conspicuous, bushy crest of a striking rufous-chestnut color. The most diagnostic identification feature is the presence of prominent white spots framed in black across the wing coverts, giving the wings a beautifully speckled appearance. The breast and belly display a uniform slaty gray color that contrasts with the warmer tones of the upperparts. It possesses a short, deep, dark gray bill and strong, grayish legs perfectly adapted for terrestrial locomotion and scratching the soil. Sexual dimorphism is highly subtle, with females being marginally smaller and showing slightly duller underparts.

Geographical distribution: This species is endemic to the central-eastern portion of South America. Its native range extends across eastern and southeastern Brazil (ranging from southern Bahia and Minas Gerais southward to Rio Grande do Sul), reaching eastern Paraguay and the extreme northeastern corner of Argentina, specifically restricted to the humid forests of the Misiones province.

Habitat: It is closely associated with the dense undergrowth of the Atlantic Forest biome. It thrives in primary and secondary tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests, showing a clear preference for areas with dense low vegetation, locally referred to as capoeiras. It occupies a wide altitudinal range, occurring from sea level up to elevations of 1600 meters above sea level, always relying on thick leaf litter.

Feeding: It exhibits an omnivorous diet, actively foraging on the forest floor by scratching through the fallen leaves. Its primary food source includes a variety of seeds, fallen berries, fruits, and delicate shoots. This vegetative diet is supplemented by animal matter, consisting of insects (such as beetles, ants, and grubs), spiders, and terrestrial mollusks that it uncovers using its powerful claws.

Behavior: Highly secretive and terrestrial, it spends almost its entire life on the ground, running swiftly through the underbrush instead of flying when threatened. It is highly social, typically moving in tight-knit family coveys containing 5 to 15 individuals. This bird is famous for its loud, melodious, and highly synchronized duet calls, which are mostly performed at dawn and dusk to maintain group cohesion and territory.

Nesting: It constructs its nest on the ground, creating a well-hidden, shallow depression near the base of large trees, under fallen logs, or within dense root systems. The nest structure is lined with dry leaves and twigs, and is often covered with a dome-shaped roof made of leaves to provide maximum camouflage. The clutch typically consists of 4 to 6 creamy white eggs. Incubation, performed mainly by the female, lasts between 24 and 28 days. The chicks are precocial, leaving the nest shortly after hatching to forage alongside both parents.

Conservation status: It is currently assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. However, local populations are experiencing a steady decline. The main threats to its survival are widespread habitat fragmentation within the Atlantic Forest, forest degradation, and persistent localized pressure from illegal hunting and trapping.
