Description


Features an elongated, fusiform, and laterally compressed body, reflecting a highly adapted design for swift pelagic swimming. Its head is moderately sized, flattened on the dorsal surface, with large eyes and a terminal, highly protractile mouth equipped with small, sharp teeth arranged in several rows. The dorsal coloration ranges from pale greenish-gray to an olivaceous hue, while the flanks display a distinctive silvery longitudinal stripe or band, bordered dorsally by a thin, dark line. The abdominal area is a brilliant white with pearlescent reflections. It possesses two completely separate dorsal fins: the first is small and supported by 4 to 8 flexible spines, whereas the second contains soft rays. The scales are cycloid, medium-sized, and cover the entire body, counting between 50 and 55 scales along the lateral line. Adult specimens typically measure between 30 and 45 centimeters in total length, although under optimal ecological conditions, exceptional individuals can reach up to 60 centimeters and exceed 1.5 kilograms in weight.

Geographical distribution: Is native to the hydrographic basins of the Pampean region in Argentina, southern Brazil (particularly the lagoon systems of Rio Grande do Sul), and throughout Uruguay, primarily associated with the Río de la Plata basin. Due to its outstanding value for recreational angling and commercial aquaculture, it has been successfully introduced into numerous freshwater bodies in Chile, high-altitude Andean lakes in Bolivia and Peru (including Lake Titicaca), as well as temperate reservoirs in Japan and Italy, demonstrating a remarkable capacity to colonize diverse global latitudes.

Habitat: Thrives in lentic systems such as shallow pampean lagoons, temperate lakes, and artificial reservoirs, although it can also be found in slow-flowing lotic environments and brackish estuaries. It exhibits extraordinary physiological plasticity, behaving as a euryhaline species capable of tolerating salinities ranging from pure freshwater to hyperhaline conditions exceeding 35 g/L. Furthermore, it tolerates a broad thermal range, remaining active between 10 °C and 28 °C, which allows it to thrive in aquatic ecosystems subject to intense seasonal environmental fluctuations.

Feeding: Demonstrates a highly adaptable and opportunistic diet that changes significantly during its ontogenetic development. During larval and early juvenile stages, it is strictly zooplanktivorous, feeding on copepods, cladocerans, and rotifers. Upon reaching adulthood, its trophic spectrum broadens to include chironomid larvae, terrestrial insects, small gastropod mollusks, decapod crustaceans, and smaller fishes, displaying opportunistic cannibalistic behavior toward its own juveniles during periods of low prey availability.

Behavior: Is a highly social and dynamic species, forming dense and coordinated shoals that act as a primary defense mechanism against predators in open-water habitats lacking physical cover. It exhibits pelagic swimming habits, constantly patrolling the middle and upper levels of the water column. Its activity is predominantly diurnal, relying heavily on visual cues to locate and capture prey, and it exhibits daily vertical migrations correlated with the movements of zooplankton toward the surface during dusk.

Reproduction: Occurs primarily during two annual spawning peaks in the spring and autumn, triggered by seasonal water temperature changes that ideally range between 15 °C and 21 °C. It is a fractional spawner, with females releasing several batches of eggs throughout the breeding season. Fertilization is external; the eggs, measuring approximately 1.5 millimeters in diameter, are demersal and feature numerous adhesive chorionic filaments that allow them to bind securely to submerged aquatic macrophytes, debris, or hard substrates, protecting them from silting and current displacement.

Conservation status: Is currently evaluated as Least Concern (LC) on a global scale due to its vast distribution, high population densities, and successful colonization of introduced habitats. However, wild populations within their native range face localized threats, including severe eutrophication from agricultural runoff, urban pollution, prolonged droughts linked to climate change, and intense, unregulated commercial and recreational fishing pressures.
