Description

Compact tyrant flycatcher measuring 14–15 cm, with a large head and a broad, very conspicuous white eyebrow that begins at the forehead and contrasts with a dark grayish-black mask. Underparts pale gray to whitish gray, becoming lighter toward the center of the abdomen. Crown dark gray; back brownish-gray with a slight cinnamon tinge on the lower back and rump, a characteristic feature of the subspecies found in Argentina. Wings dark brown with two conspicuous cinnamon wingbars in this subspecies. Tail dark with white outer edges, visible in flight. Bill black, thin, and pointed; legs black. Sexes similar. Juvenile browner, with more pronounced wingbars.

It differs from the Rufous-bellied Bush Tyrant (Ochthoeca oenanthoides), which is usually found at higher elevations, although the two species may overlap in the same area. The main distinction is the grayish belly, as the Rufous-bellied Bush Tyrant has a distinctly cinnamon coloration on the underparts.

Geographic Distribution: It has six subspecies distributed along the Andes, from southern Ecuador to northern Chile and northwestern Argentina. In Argentina, the Tucumán subspecies occurs from Salta southward to northern Mendoza, at elevations between 2,000 and 3,400 m above sea level. During winter, it may descend to lower-elevation ravines and areas of montane forest. In Tucumán, it is common in the ravines of the Cumbres Calchaquíes, at around 3,000 m above sea level, where it breeds.

Habitat: It inhabits mainly mountain ravines and slopes, especially areas associated with streams and mountain watercourses. It prefers sites with shrubs and dense vegetation within ravines, but also occupies areas with sparser vegetation when cliffs, rocky walls, and rocks suitable for perching are present. It can also be found in the ecotone with montane Yungas forest and, occasionally, in Andean settlements.

Behavior: Usually solitary or found in pairs, and territorial. It remains upright on branches, shrubs, rocks, or rocky walls, from where it makes short flights to capture prey. It vocalizes frequently; its song consists of a repeated sequence of brief buzzes or whistles, while its call is a piercing whistle that can be heard from some distance.

Diet: Feeds mainly on arthropods, which it captures with short flights from exposed perches, but it may also pick them from the ground or rocky walls. It often remains alert from an elevated position before rapidly launching itself at its prey. It does not join mixed-species flocks.

Breeding: In December, several nests were found in the same ravine area of Tucumán, within high-elevation grasslands, at approximately 3,100 m above sea level. The nests were placed on shrubs, concealed among the vegetation, and were cup-shaped. They were constructed from twigs, grasses, feathers, and wool, and contained one or two white eggs with small brown spots or speckles (photo) (personal observation).

Conservation Status: It is not currently assigned a threatened category at either the national or international level. Although it is common in ravines and other montane environments with rocks, shrubs, and watercourses, these habitats may be affected by livestock grazing, burning, vegetation modification, and other forms of habitat alteration.
