Description

This is a medium-sized passerine bird belonging to the ovenbird family, measuring approximately 16 to 17 centimeters in total length. It possesses a subtle and cryptic plumage, with grayish-brown upperparts, a distinct whitish supercilium, and a clean, pale throat that contrasts with its darker cheeks. The breast and belly are primarily light gray with very faint, delicate streaks. Its most defining and diagnostic physical feature is its striking tail pattern: the central rectrices are dark brown, whereas the outer tail feathers display a vibrant rufous-chestnut base capped by a broad, prominent blackish terminal band. The bill is relatively long, slender, slightly decurved, and dark horn-colored, perfectly adapted for probing.

Geographical distribution: It is endemic to the southern cone of South America. Its distribution range is concentrated in the Patagonian steppe of Argentina, extending from the southern parts of Mendoza and La Pampa provinces, south through Neuquén, Río Negro, Chubut, and down to Santa Cruz. It also ranges marginally into adjacent areas of southern Chile, with documented occurrences in the eastern, drier parts of the Aisén and Magallanes regions, close to the Argentine border.

Habitat: It is closely restricted to arid and semi-arid scrublands and plains typical of the Patagonian region. It favors rocky slopes, sandy flats, and plateau areas dominated by low, thorny shrubs such as Chuquiraga and Mulinum, as well as scattered bunchgrasses. It occurs from sea level up to elevations of about 1200 meters, completely avoiding humid forest biomes and high-altitude Andean slopes.

Feeding: It is predominantly insectivorous, searching for its prey on the dry ground. It actively walks and runs along the soil, using its long, specialized bill to flip leaves, probe into crevices, and dig into the sandy soil. Its diet consists of a wide variety of terrestrial invertebrates, including beetles, ants, spiders, insect larvae, and other small arthropods that thrive in the arid undergrowth.

Behavior: Highly terrestrial in its habits, this species prefers to run quickly across open ground rather than taking flight. When startled or stopping, it frequently performs a characteristic display of cocking its tail high over its back. Its flights are short, jerky, and close to the ground, usually ending abruptly inside the dense cover of a thorny bush. It is generally found singly or in pairs, maintaining territories through a sharp, metallic, and repetitive call.

Nesting: It constructs a bulky, spherical nest made of tightly interwoven thorny twigs, which acts as an effective defense against local predators. This dome-like structure is typically situated low to the ground within the dense branches of a thorny shrub. The nesting chamber inside is lined with softer materials, including dry grasses, animal hair, and feathers. The female typically lays 3 to 4 white eggs, and both parents participate in incubating the eggs and feeding the chicks.

Conservation status: It is currently classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. Although it is not a highly abundant species throughout its range and is strictly dependent on the fragile Patagonian steppe ecosystem, its population trends are considered stable, primarily because its remote and harsh arid habitats face relatively low levels of immediate agricultural or urban development pressure.
