Description


 Characterized by an extraordinary cryptic morphology designed for ground camouflage, this medium-sized nightjar ranges from 22 to 30 centimeters in length and weighs between 70 and 90 grams. Formally classified as Nyctidromus albicollis, it features a plumage dominated by intricate patterns of brown, gray, buff, and black, mimicking fallen leaves. A highly diagnostic key feature is the prominent white throat collar that stands out against its dark facial markings. In flight, it reveals striking white or buff wing bars across the primaries, alongside white outer tail feathers, which are significantly broader and more conspicuous in males than in females. Unlike most other caprimulgids, this taxon possesses proportionately long, strong legs, which grant it remarkable agility when running or hopping on the ground.

Geographical distribution: Occurs widely throughout the Neotropical realm, establishing a vast and continuous range. It is found from the southern tip of Texas in the United States and northern Mexico, extending southward through Central America into South America, where it occupies territories east of the Andes down to northern Argentina, Uruguay, and southern Brazil.

Habitat: Prefers semi-open areas rather than dense, continuous forests. It is frequently observed in secondary growth forests, forest edges, scrublands, agricultural clearings, savannas, and roadsides. These ecotones provide the perfect combination of open spaces for foraging and dense undergrowth for roosting and nesting, protecting the species from aerial predators during the daylight hours.

Feeding: Relies on an exclusively insectivorous diet, active primarily during twilight and nocturnally. Its prey consists mainly of beetles (Coleoptera), moths (Lepidoptera), grasshoppers, and true bugs. It hunts using a "sallying" technique, sitting on the ground or low perches and launching into acrobatic aerial sorties to capture flying insects, assisted by a wide gape lined with rictal bristles that direct prey into its mouth.

Behavior: Strictly crepuscular and nocturnal, it spends the daylight hours roosting motionless on the forest floor, relying entirely on its disruptive coloration. When approached too closely, it takes off in a silent, low-altitude flight to a nearby spot. It is highly vocal, known for its distinctive, rhythmic whistled call transliterated as "puc-weee-oo" or "who-are-you". Under artificial light, its large eyes reflect a striking, intense orange-red eyeshine.

Nesting: Does not construct a physical nest structure of any kind. Instead, the female deposits a clutch of two pinkish-buff eggs decorated with brown and lilac speckles directly onto the leaf litter, typically under the shade of a shrub, fallen log, or low branch. Both parents share incubation duties for about 19 to 20 days, with the female usually incubating during the daytime and the male taking over at night, relying on their exceptional camouflage to conceal the breeding site.

Conservation status: Listed as Least Concern (LC)** on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Its population is considered stable, largely due to its high tolerance for human-modified habitats and secondary growth forests, although it faces localized threats such as road mortality and predation by introduced domestic animals.
