Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Representing a highly specialized avian taxon, this medium-sized bird typically measures between 13 and 15 inches (33 to 38 centimeters) in length and weighs around 145 to 202 grams. It is characterized by an extraordinary cryptically patterned plumage dominated by a complex mosaic of gray, brown, black, and buff tones, which perfectly mimics dry tree bark or broken branches. While its beak is remarkably small, its gaping mouth is exceptionally wide, stretching back beneath the eyes to capture flying prey efficiently. Its large, prominent eyes feature a vibrant yellow-to-orange iris; notably, its upper eyelids possess specialized slit-like micro-apertures, allowing the bird to monitor its surroundings and detect predators even when its eyes are completely closed.

Geographical distribution: This species is widely distributed throughout the Neotropic region. Its geographic range extends from southern Mexico through Central America (including countries such as Guatemala, Costa Rica, and Panama) down into South America, where it occurs across Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, the vast territory of Brazil, Paraguay, and reaches its southern distribution limits in northern Argentina and Uruguay.

Habitat: It primarily occupies open deciduous and semi-deciduous forests, forest edges, wooded savannas (cerrado), secondary growth areas, and suburban parks with mature tree cover. It avoids the interior of dense, unbroken humid rainforests, preferring open-canopy habitats where fragmented vegetation provides optimal perches for camouflage and hunting. It can be found from sea level up to elevations of approximately 6,200 feet (1,900 meters).

Feeding: Its diet is strictly insectivorous, focusing on large flying nocturnal and crepuscular invertebrates. Primary prey items include beetles (Coleoptera), moths (Lepidoptera), termites, orthopterans, and mantids. It employs a sit-and-wait foraging strategy, remaining motionless on a prominent perch until detecting an insect, then launching into a silent, agile aerial sally to snatch the prey in mid-air with its expansive gape before returning to the same or a neighboring branch to swallow it.

Behavior: It exhibits highly nocturnal and crepuscular patterns of activity, spending daylight hours completely motionless. During the day, it adopts an upright, rigid posture on tree stumps or broken branches, stretching its neck and tilting its bill upward at a 45-degree angle. This "freeze" posture, combined with its disruptive coloration, makes it virtually indistinguishable from dead wood. At dusk, it emerges from torpor to vocalize, producing a haunting, melancholic, and down-slurring song of five to eight notes that is famous in regional folklore.

Nesting: It does not construct a physical nest of any kind. Instead, the female deposits a single egg directly into a natural shallow depression, crevice, or knot-hole on the flat top of a broken vertical branch, typically situated at heights ranging from 10 to 50 feet (3 to 15 meters) above the ground. The egg is dull white, speckled with dark brown, purple, and gray spots. Incubation lasts approximately 30 to 33 days and is shared by both parents; the male typically incubates during the day, maintaining a strict camouflage posture, while the female takes over at night. The semi-precocial chick is covered in white down and remains highly cryptic, mimicking a fungus or wood knot until fledging at around 40 to 50 days of age.

Conservation status: It is currently evaluated as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Although its populations are considered stable due to its vast geographical range and tolerance of moderately degraded habitats, it faces ongoing localized pressures from deforestation, habitat fragmentation, and agricultural pesticide use that depletes nocturnal insect populations. Additionally, misinformed local superstitions regarding its eerie nocturnal calls occasionally lead to direct persecution in rural areas.
