Small Andean and montane tinamou, 26 to 30 cm long, with an overall lead-gray to grayish-brown coloration, varying according to region. The lower neck and breast show a characteristic pattern of small whitish spots over a lead-gray background, while the belly is paler. The head presents fine dark streaking and a black postocular line. The back and wings display an intricate network of whitish streaks and alternating black and brown bands, forming a characteristic scaled and vermiculated pattern that provides excellent camouflage. It possesses a small erectile crest, a relatively long downward-curved bill, generally yellowish or yellowish-pink, and strikingly yellow legs. The iris is reddish-brown and surrounded by a fine yellowish or orange periocular ring. Sexes are similar. Juveniles show browner tones and a more barred breast. This species presents marked geographic variation. Four subspecies are recognized in Argentina. The northwestern Andean forms (pentlandii and patriciae) show browner and warmer tones. Patriciae is restricted to Andean sectors of western Salta, while pentlandii occupies much of the remainder of northwestern Argentina. In contrast, doeringi (Central Sierras) and mendozae (western Argentina) are grayer, especially on the head, neck, and breast.
In part of its distribution it may coexist with the Ornate Tinamou (Nothoprocta ornata), the Huayco Tinamou (Rhynchotus maculicollis), and the Brushland Tinamou (Nothoprocta cinerascens). It differs by its smaller size, overall lead-gray appearance, spotted breast, yellow legs, and highly characteristic whistle.
Geographic Distribution: Inhabits the Andean region from southern Ecuador and Peru through Bolivia and into central-western Argentina, where it occurs in Jujuy, Salta, Tucumán, Catamarca, La Rioja, marginally San Juan, Córdoba, San Luis, Mendoza, and locally northern Neuquén. It occurs from low mountain ranges of central Argentina to high Andean environments above 4,000 m. It is considered resident, although local altitudinal movements may occur.
Habitat: Inhabits open montane and Andean environments with shrubs and grasslands. In northwestern Argentina, the subspecies pentlandii and patriciae are characteristic of ravines, shrubby slopes, prepuna, upper foothill sectors, and transitional environments with the Yungas, in addition to high-altitude grasslands. In the central sierras, doeringi frequents montane grasslands, shrublands, and open woodlands of tabaquillo and molle, while mendozae occupies montane and pre-Andean environments of western Argentina.
Diet: Omnivorous. Searches for food while walking on the ground among vegetation. Consumes seeds, shoots, tender leaves, fruits, and other plant material. Complements its diet with insects and various arthropods.
Behavior: Generally solitary or found in pairs. It is a walking species, shy and difficult to observe, as it usually remains hidden among grasses and shrubs. When threatened, it normally runs or hides before taking flight. When it finally does, it takes off suddenly and noisily, moving away through a succession of rapid wingbeats and brief glides, as do all tinamous of the genus. Its voice consists of one or several high-pitched, thin, ascending whistles, audible at great distances and responsible for its common name. It may also produce an accelerated series of melodious notes when taking flight. Compared with the Ornate Tinamou, it produces shorter and more abrupt notes, while the Huayco Tinamou emits a deeper, slower, and more resonant whistle.
Nesting: The nest consists of a shallow depression lined with grasses, dry stems, and some feathers, concealed on the ground. Clutch size is usually 5 to 10 glossy bright chocolate-colored eggs, although occasionally larger. As in other tinamous, the male is primarily responsible for incubation and later chick care.
Conservation Status: Considered Least Concern at both national and international levels due to its wide distribution and because it remains common throughout much of its range. No significant threats have been identified globally, although locally it may be affected by hunting pressure and habitat modifications in some regions.
