Description


Characterized by a stout, compact body typical of the Tinamidae family, this medium-sized bird measures between 30 and 33 centimeters in length and weighs approximately 250 to 350 grams. Its plumage displays a highly complex cryptic pattern, dominated by greyish-brown and olive tones on the upperparts, intricately vermiculated with black, white, and buff streaks that provide exceptional camouflage against dry leaf litter. The breast is ash-grey with distinctive white teardrop-shaped spots, fading to a paler whitish or buff color on the abdomen. The small head sits atop a slender neck, showing a dark crown and a faint pale supercilium. The bill is relatively long, strong, and slightly decurved, with a dark horn coloration, while the strong, unfeathered legs are a contrasting lead-grey color.

Geographical distribution: Endemic to the southern cone of South America, this species occupies a vast range that encompasses southeastern Bolivia, western Paraguay, extreme southwestern Brazil (specifically in the border areas of Mato Grosso do Sul and Rio Grande do Sul), and a wide extension of northern and central Argentina, reaching its southernmost limit in the Patagonian provinces of La Pampa and Río Negro.

Habitat: Primarily inhabits semi-arid and xerophytic ecosystems, showing a strong preference for the dry Chaco woodlands, thorny scrublands, deciduous forests, and open savannas with dense grass cover. It can be found from sea level up to elevations of approximately 2,000 meters on the eastern slopes of the Andes, always associated with sandy or clay soils where low-growing vegetation offers adequate cover from predators.

Feeding: Sustains an omnivorous and opportunistic diet that fluctuates according to seasonal availability. During the dry winter months, it feeds mainly on plant matter, including grass seeds, tender shoots, leaves, small tubers, and fallen wild fruits from native Chaco flora. In the spring and summer, its diet shifts significantly toward animal protein, actively foraging for various invertebrates such as beetles, grasshoppers, ants, and insect larvae, which it uncovers by scratching the soil with its feet and probing with its bill.

Behavior: Terrestrial and highly secretive, this bird prefers to escape danger by running swiftly through dense undergrowth rather than taking flight. When startled, it often freezes in place, relying on its disruptive coloration, and will only perform a loud, explosive, short-distance flight as a last resort. It is generally solitary or found in pairs outside the breeding season. Males are well-known for their loud, melancholic whistling calls, usually consisting of a single repeated note delivered most frequently at dawn and dusk.

Nesting: Exhibits a complex mating system characterized by sequential polyandry and polygyny, with reversed parental roles. The male is solely responsible for constructing the nest, which is a shallow scrape on the ground well-hidden under thorny bushes or dense tussocks, lined with dry grass and feathers. Multiple females deposit their eggs in a single male´s nest, resulting in clutches of 4 to 10 highly glossy eggs that range in color from deep chocolate brown to purplish-grey. The male incubates the eggs for about 19 to 21 days and solely cares for the precocial chicks, which leave the nest shortly after hatching.

Conservation status: Classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. Although its global population of Nothoprocta cinerascens is considered stable and it remains common across much of its range, local populations face ongoing threats from habitat loss and fragmentation caused by agricultural expansion, deforestation within the Chaco region, and localized hunting pressure.
