Description


Belongs to a distinctive group of Neotropical near-passerines known for their stout build and sit-and-wait hunting strategy, measuring approximately 23 to 25 centimeters in length. It features a disproportionately large head with a heavy, black bill that is strongly hooked at the tip and surrounded by prominent rictal bristles. The dorsal plumage is a deep, glossy blue-black, which creates a sharp contrast with a broad white forehead and a distinct white collar around the hindneck. The most diagnostic characteristic of this taxon is its ventral coloration: it possesses a wide black breast band, below which the belly and flanks are washed with a rich ochraceous-buff or warm cinnamon hue, clearly separating it from its white-bellied relatives. The eyes have a dark reddish to brownish iris, and the feet are short, zygodactyl, and dark gray. There is no obvious sexual dimorphism, as both male and female specimens share the same plumage patterns and measurements.

Geographical distribution: This species is endemic to the southern regions of South America, primarily associated with the highly threatened Atlantic Forest biome. Its range extends across southeastern and southern Brazil (from the states of Bahia and Minas Gerais south to Rio Grande do Sul), eastern Paraguay, and northeastern Argentina, where it is restricted to the subtropical forests of the Misiones province.

Habitat: It primarily occupies the canopy and subcanopy of humid tropical and subtropical forests, as well as semi-deciduous woodlands and transitional forest edges. While it shows a strong preference for pristine primary forests, it can occasionally adapt to mature secondary forests and tall coastal restingas, provided there are tall emergent trees and a well-preserved canopy structure that facilitates its specialized hunting techniques.

Feeding: Its diet is predominantly insectivorous, supplemented by opportunistic predation on small vertebrates. It targets large arthropods such as beetles, cicadas, grasshoppers, mantises, and spiders. On occasion, it also preys upon small lizards, frogs, and may consume small forest fruits. It employs a passive search method, remaining completely motionless on high, exposed perches for extended periods before executing a rapid, explosive aerial sally to snatch prey from the vegetation or the ground, returning immediately to its perch to beat and swallow the catch.

Behavior: This bird is typically solitary or found in pairs, known for its extremely quiet, sluggish, and inconspicuous nature, which makes it challenging to detect despite its size. It spends long hours sitting upright on dry, high branches, puffing out its feathers, a behavior that gives the family its common name. Its vocalization is a sequence of rising, musical, and tremulous whistled notes, delivered mainly at dawn or during the breeding season to establish territory.

Nesting: Breeding pairs cooperate closely to excavate their nesting cavity, which is almost exclusively bored into active arboreal termite nests (termitaria) or occasionally in highly decayed tree trunks at considerable heights. The female typically lays a clutch of two to three glossy white eggs. Both parents participate equally in incubating the eggs and subsequently brooding and provisioning the altricial chicks, feeding them large, crushed insects until they are fully fledged and ready to disperse.

Conservation status: It is currently classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. However, its populations are highly fragmented and experiencing localized declines due to the severe devastation of the Atlantic Forest, intensive logging, the removal of mature trees needed for nesting, and general habitat degradation across its restricted geographic range.
