Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Characterized by an elegant, slender silhouette and a highly pronounced sexual dimorphism, this medium-sized passerine belongs to the diverse Neotropical family Thraupidae. Adults of Nemosia pileata measure approximately 13 centimeters in length and weigh between 10 and 14 grams. The male is easily identified by its striking jet-black hood and mask, which contrast sharply with a white forehead, a vivid bright yellow iris, bluish-gray upperparts, and pristine snow-white underparts. In contrast, the female lacks the dark facial mask, displaying a soft sandy-buff crown and face, olive-gray upperparts, and pale yellowish-white underparts, while retaining the diagnostic yellow eye that aids in field identification.

Geographical distribution: This species is widely distributed across northern and central South America, with documented populations spanning Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, and northern Argentina. In Brazil, its occurrence is extensive, covering the Amazon basin, the semi-arid northeastern regions, and the vast central savannas, exhibiting an adaptable transcontinental distribution.

Habitat: It primarily inhabits the canopy and sub-canopy of semi-open woodlands, gallery forests, riverine edges, Caatinga dry scrub, Cerrado savannas, coastal mangroves, and mature secondary forests. It generally avoids the interior of dense, continuous humid rainforests, showing a strong preference for forest borders, ecotones, and even urban parks or suburban gardens containing mature canopy trees.

Feeding: Having an omnivorous diet, this bird specializes in consuming small invertebrates, such as caterpillars, spiders, and aphids, which it gleans from the outer leaves of branches using agile, acrobatic movements. This insectivorous intake is regularly supplemented with small berries, succulent fruits, and nectar from various flowers, making this species an effective local seed disperser and occasional pollinator.

Behavior: Highly active and social, this species is typically observed in pairs or small family groups foraging in the upper strata of the forest. It is a frequent and nuclear member of mixed-species feeding flocks, traveling alongside other tanagers, warblers, and honeycreepers to enhance foraging efficiency and predator detection within the canopy.

Nesting: Breeding activities are closely synchronized with the onset of the local rainy season. The pair constructs a delicate yet resilient cup-shaped nest made of fine plant fibers, mosses, and spiderwebs, which serve to bind the structure firmly to a high, leaf-sheltered tree fork. The female lays a clutch of two to three greenish-white eggs speckled with brown markings, incubating them for about twelve days while the male remains nearby to defend the nesting territory.

Conservation status: It is currently classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Although localized populations experience habitat fragmentation and loss due to agricultural expansion, the species´ broad ecological tolerance and extensive geographic range ensure that its global population remains stable and secure.
